SOC, I can’t agree more with you. Wise words from an American, eventhough we probably share other thoughts. Maybe we should now all forget about the article, both sides of the atlantic admit it’s crap.

Minidoh, nobody is forcing you to learn French. I mean, there are already so many different kinds of English today (look at the topic Spelling). I’m sure it’ll be easier for you to find a job if you were able to speak Slang, dialects from North-England, Welsh etc.
As a Belgian, I’m damn proud our children are taught 3 different languages, plus English as a bonus. To be honest, I like the French language more than English, ofcourse that’s a matter of opinion.
The differences between England and the continent are mainly political. Culturally, the English are very fond of Europe. Thrown out of the EU, the English could still accept, but being banned from the UEFA, ouwch, that would kill the entire “empire”.
Minidoh, your post was childish, idiot and full of cliches and biases. It began by saying you were English, not British. Well here’s some news for you, England hasn’t been a nation anymore since 1702 or so. You’re a ****ing Brit, wheter you like it or not. How can you feel more related to Americans than to your own fellow countrymen, the Welsh, scotch and Ires. I have to puke, sorry!

If you really want to know what’s making Europeans pissed of, have a look at the PNAC http://www.newamericancentury.org

The third point is very interesting. I think we here in Europe should be more competitive, but you should remember that we can’t all be at the top, so there needs to be some protection for the people that just can’t heck it so to say. But that works both ways of course.
Some wise words Jeroen. Have you perhaps read the work of ALEXANDRE DE TOCQUEVILLE “La democracie en Amerique”. This 19th century Frenchman admired the US because of its democracy and similarities with France. On the other hand, he found that two of the three “values” which make part of a modern democracy, “liberté” and “égalité” are sometimes contradictions. It’s true, a democracy can also be seen as a dictatorship of the majority. Too much freedom means that a new class will erupt, a class of intellectuals and businessman, which will opress the rest of the population. Minorities also have to be protected, so there needs to be a good balance between liberté and égalité.
