Re: Anything French!
Sure, anything French. I see you added a picture of Serge Gaingsbourg to it. I think he’s one of the greatest artists ever. But US Agent, I don’t think you have any idea about culture outside your tiny world that’s called the US. Sad, very sad.
I’m not saying there aren’t problems in China, the latest SARS-crisis proved this. But Mongu, the arguments you used could as well be used against the US or any other western republic (I try to avoid the word democracy) in the world. National states are not perfect.
If I could chose to live in the US or in China, I would opt for the first. Because I live in the west and it would be hard to give up everything. But I honestly don’t believe a Chinese would be so much happier in the US or any other western country. It’s a different culture, but therefor not more violent. This is like saying the war in the Balkans happened because the people living there are moor blood-thirsty and less peace-loving. It’s just crap, there are only cultural differences between China and the west, one of them is the individualism in our world which we think is the best of all forms.

New-age humming Tibetan monks accompanied by whistling wales and didgeridoos together with Amazonian raindrops and synthesized pseudo-traditional African drums.

In Belgium.
First you say ‘Hallo’ and if the person doesn’t respond, try saying ‘bonjour’ 😀 And if that doesn’t work, say ‘Gutentag’. But really, make sure you say Hallo first in Flanders and not bonjour, or you will face consequences (the same for the Wallonians and the Germano Belgians). Though there are some communities in Flanders where it is better to say ‘Bonjour’ first.
And if you’re in Brussels, don’t say anything! Just continue walking, and act if nobody’s there. 😀 😀 Most likely a Belgian will respond to you in Japanese though, even if you look like an average European.
Can you imagine the difficult job our king has when he holds his anual speech on our national holiday. And that our Queen doesn’t speak any of the three official languages 😀 She’s Italian.
If Belgium would have been a republic, surely, it should be named the one and only banana republic.

– Lack of personal freedoms (eg. internet censorship)
– Brutal repression (eg. Tiananmen Square)
– Lack of democracy (eg. one party state)
– Hugely militaristic society (eg. unusually high % of GDP)
– Propaganda (think of Pravda)

I thought I was reading Bush’s updates on the American constitution here, Mongu. Surely, these things have nothing to do with communism. America is not democratic either, and propaganda, mmm, hollywood? Militarsitic society? Have a look at the US military’s spending, compare it to other ‘less democratic countries’. Utter, utter BS!
Communism is not the opposite of democracy. Neither is capitalism the same as democracy. Currently, there aren’t any ‘real’ democracies in this world, some countries like Finland and Sweden have much in common with it, but still, are not 100 % democratic. Democracy is not the most humane form of leadership, the introduction of democracies in Western-Europe after the Enlightning led to atrocities like the Holocaust. Horrible things were done in the past to save ‘democracy’. If us westerners stop focussing on ‘capitalist democracy’ as the only decent way of leadership, maybe that would open the dialogue with countries like China.
And Alex, technically spoken Bulgaria is not a country of the ‘west’. 🙂 Neither is Greece, for example. Different culture, but politically, Bulgaria should become a part of the west, and I mean Europe :D.

That’s odd, I was thinking the same type of thing about you…since you seem to be doing an excellent job of reinforcing the traditional image of a brainwashed, CCP-card carrying member of the PLA.

So strange how people seem to relate the words of democracy to peace. If China was a democracy, than I think the colonisation of Tibet would have been OK for most of you guys, much like nobody argues here about NATO’s ‘colonisation’ in Kosovo. I do think NATO’s actions were necessairy, but it’s still a form of colonialism. Another example, what would have happened if General Musharraf did not take over power in oktober 1999. The US would still support a corrupt democratic regime. Democratic, why? Because its leaders are elected? Musharraf is pro-Western because he’s a liberal and he supports capitalism, not because he read Montesqieu.
