What right or interest does a non-involved third party have to express their negative views?

the same right as they may/or not have to express their positive views?

Can it only be writers that can comment on books, or musicians to comment on music?

Lets face it, if you don’t want publicity, don’t publish!

Reminds me very much of that series of ” restoration” programs on Discovery chanel, hosted by Mark(I’m a vet really )Evans, where he takes a vehicle (which is not actually that bad) and replaces everything with new build panels, wheels, interior trim, etc; clearly there is more skill required to straighten and rework old metal, as opposed to replacing it wholesale and it will more time consuming, with a financial cost attached.

the visitors would barely notice anyway ;Key point, who other than DB cares that it is a French licence built version?

If the IWM is there to educate the public in all aspects of war, then it could do with a bit more of the opposition’s hardware; looking around DX there is precious little in the way of axis A/C.

The statement on the varsity says corrosion is a factor in it’s disposal, but in the condition section, it says it’s fairly sound! either the Vampire or the Venom is missing it’s engine, and that is a factor; the mk24 Spitfire is missing everything under the cowlings, but apparently that’s not.

If we are talking about ww2 era A/C (the two examples I have given are that)then they need to have built in that time period, and be extant in that ex factory condition.

Original structure would be that which it left the factory with.

It’s also possible to change your mind; ten years ago I thought that non flying museum A/C were a lost opportunity, in the susequent years we have lost quite a few flyers, some have been reborn, but that just highlights the dilema, I now believe genuine time capsule A/C should remain tucked up in (some cases) dimly lit museums!

In many ways A/C that have been “reborn from the ashes” are the best possible machines to fly, damage to them, as sad as that maybe, (and we might only be talking a wheels up or U/C failure) will not involve the loss of any original structure.

If A/C such as the Sahara P40 (should it ever be recovered) and Swamp ghost, were to lose a substantial amount of quite obviously original structure, (in the process of making them airworthy) then (in my view) that would be wrong.

I quote someone who is at the top of the tree within the industry, he says (on the subject of what “bits” you should or should not reuse) “it’s a mans life at stake, safety is no1” if he is not satisfied that any component will perform as it would when new, he wont sign it off.

The argument will never go away simply because a definitive answer cannot be given; there is no accepted percentage of original material laid down, because there is no governing body to do this.

Even “data plate” Spitfires have original engines (not neccasarily the original engine); however the secrecy that surrounds many of these “new” rebuilds does nothing for the image of warbird restoration.

There is always the option for those not currently building a Spitfire, to resurrect one of these lost types for themselves…..

I genuinely believe that it is a good thing that someone was passionate enough to comission a MKI rebuild, and that a huge amount of effort has been expended in getting the recreation exact; there is no reason that the story of P9374 and “P9374” should not be told, as long as the lines aren’t blurred.

As a restorer I might be more interested in the amount of orginal material used, (than a casual observer) but as has been pointed out, many Spitfires that have flown continuously since the 50’s have had several rebuilds, wheels up repairs, high back/low back, 2 seats, “E” wing/wet wing, 4 blade/3 blade (2 blade, one man and his dog) etc, etc.

In all honesty with the budget set as it is, and working within the specified time frame, I’d say no chance, but best of luck anyway.

There were a couple of U/C legs on ebay, recently, they were a bit rough but probably could have been made presentable, but even they were £200- and then you need axles, wheels & tyres and a means of securing them to the airframe.

Anyone got a spare wheel; I’ve got a tyre but no wheel ( it’s true)
