I think I’ve got some bits with 103-, 104- and 106- variously; I did wonder whether they related to the different mks of p51, as they are all armour plate.
Don’t forget the free copy for the winner of the limerick competition……
I seem to remember some sub assemblies were built at a factory making steam engines,(probably rollers) and the owner was none too happy!
What about the one they sanded all the dome head rivets “flush” during the prep, and apparently the owner flew it away unfinished; can’t remember the type, but seem to remember it was a US warbird.
The photo above, for me absolutely epitomises the spirit of the Battle of Britain pilots. RIP Sir.
Wouldn’t it probably just been a light weight mock-up, taken around the
country for fund raising purposes ?
Most mock-up’s tend to be heavier than the real thing, most likely a genuine airframe, devoid of engine, guns, and undercarriage, just because the gun ports look like they aren’t there, it doesn’t mean the haven’t been subtley patched over and painted to match; the British public is remarkably good a stuffing rubbish into any orifice (ooer missus)they can find, way before the styrofoam cup…..
What happened to the oft quoted “duty of care”? EH are normally only too pleased to enforce remedial works, and this is grade 2* ; he says since the restoration work, has stopped it has become dangerous…. a bit obvious really isn’t it?
Spitfire code LM-F (sheltering from a bombing raid)
P9316, is given as shot down over Kent, if there was a dig at Howe green farm, Purleigh, it might have been the Essex aviation group they were based at Tilbury fort, one of the group (Colin) used to post on this forum; they list all their digs on their web page.
I met Robin a few times and chatted to him about his engine, a superb engineer, and an all round nice bloke; he’ll be sadly missed.
“The excavation at the crash site took place, I believe, in 1982. I do not know the detail of what was recovered save to say that the CBAF constructor’s data plate from the cockpit was found.”
See my signature below…..
The Oxford english dickseanharry, defines expert thus; “X” is an unknown quantity, and a “spurt” is a drip under pressure……seems about right.
” A third of each wing” a third of a wing laddie, a third….
Sorry wrong “Mersey” didn’t mean to offend.
There was a suggestion a few years ago that the “mersea mafia” should set up on a revolving stand, to make it easier to hand out the prizes……
