I found this article about Palma on the Military Parade website:
http://milparade.udm.ru/24/044.htm
Although this article was written in 1997, it basically told the ideas about that CIWS system.
Gentlemen, any new info about this Palma? Has the palma been exported yet? Any idea about its price on international arms market?
thats tracking radar Rice lamp aka RAN-20/SPG-74? not a search radar so dont what chinese use for that purpose. Russians typically use large surv radars for theirs, positiv for ak-630s/Kashtan i believe they devoloped phased array version of positiv for kashtan-m1. As for type 730 vs ak-630 it depends, latter was designed to cheap quantity vs quality.
Hi, JonS.
Do you know the price of AK-630?
If you do, please tell us about that and, if possible, share your source with us, OK? Thanks a lot.
My theory remains that the French at most COULD have provided software, testdata and engineering asistance. UNLIKE with LAVI, I have NOT EVER heard or read anything by anybody in relevant business or government that would indicate that the french assisted the Chinese in developing their CIWS.
What sources/information/references can you present that would support your THEORY that China obtained any help from France in develping the Type 730? Without any evidence (and to make it easy for you I use that term loosely, in the broadest possible sense of the word) to support the theory why would anyone accept it as true? And mind you, I’m not expecting to find French or Chinese ‘official reports’. I’ll accept articles from industry publications (e.g. Janes) or think tanks (e.g. RAND) too. Even less than that.
I don’t want you opinion, I want a convincing and substantiated case supporting your theory.
I agree with your theory.
Also, I’m wondering how you can get all the articles you want from RAND? Are these important articles free of charge or you have to subscribe and pay?
Any incling how much RAM (21 round launcher) and SeaRam (RAMmed Phalanx mount) cost?
I have just dug deeper into the SIPRI website as you have suggested. But I find the website doesn’t contain much free info about the matter I am interested in.
In the “arms transfer” section, I have downloaded some brief reports about the arms exprot data of Russia between 1994 and 2004. But this document dosen’t provide much price info of the trade. Maybe those useful inof are provided in their Year Book, which is not for free.
this similar to the thread u posted earliar on CIWS both of them should be merged.
Anyway from top of my head
Phalanx orginal costs around 5 million (not adj for inflation), costs around 4.5 million to upg orginal to 1B. Based on recent order i believe cost of
Phalanx 1b is around ~ 9.5 million $.
Goalkeeper ~ 11 million euros
Kashtan ~ 20 million $?
This thread mainly focus on the method to gather contract infomation, esp. price information, about the CIWS, and other amrs trade in general. That is a little different from the other threat about CIWS technology characteristics. Even so, I want to thank you for your concern.
The price info “from top of your head” does draw a lot of my attention. I knew that GoalKeeper is almost twice as much as basic models of Phalanx in price. Now you’ve just give me some idea about the Kashtan. But does anyone know how much the Palma is? Or it has not been exported yet? How about AK630?
how good is the Meroka ? photo shows a radar and optical device
I think the Meroka is not so good and mature as those CIWSs I’ve mentioned above. Its calibre and fire rate are not so powerful as Palma/Kashtan/AK630/GoalKeeper, and its fire control technology are primitive compares to the phalanx.
BTW, I think Meroka even isn’t as good as Chinese Type 730.
Guys,
Do you have any photos of the Palma CIWS in service? I have searched a lot but haven’t got lucky yet.
I don’t think the Phalanx is the best of the bunch. It is largely automated. I don’t know if there is an ability to use it as an anti-surface weapon with optical control.
Most other systems seem multi-function in the type of targets they can engage and the types of control.
In the Phalanx-1B CIWS, a FLIR is added to the complex and hence the system is developed with surface engagment ability.
So, the Phalanx is just as versatile as any other CIWS you name it.
You search on the internet on the particular type of CIWS and see if you can find anything about this or that navy signing a contract for some of these systems. You’ll probably find several ‘deals’ for each system. You then figure out what each of the contract entails exactly (weapons, spare parts, training etc). By comparing contract values and what the contracts entail, you will be able to narrow down the price of each CIWS, within a reasonable margin of error.
Good places to start are SIPRI and other research institutes that monitor and publish reports on arms trade.
Thank you very very much, Wanshan!
The method you recommanded works to me!
Also, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute website really contains some useful infomation about international weapon transfer, and basically those info are free to access. The SIPRI is just a good place to start with.
Hoping you can share more sources like SIPRI with us.
Thanks again!
According to the JDW Dec 17, 2003 issue, Russian navy has deployed the second Gepand class missile speed-boat “Dagestan”, on which a set of Palma CIWS is mounted.
Thanks to DIU @ Tanknet Forum for this information about Russian CIWS
The article http://nvo.ng.ru/printed/armament/2005-03-04/6_kalibr.html can be trusted. It is written by A.I. Reznik, “specialist for missile and artillery armaments” from Sevastopol, i.e. from the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
(although it’s in Russia)
Thanks to Blackcat for this picture of a model of Palma
Not like the closely related product Kashtan, the Palma is still a mystic one to the public. Until now, only very few information about the Palma has been released to the English-speaking world.
To my limited knowledge, the Palma is only a simplified version of Kashtan, which has more complicated all-in-one radar system within the complex.
Admittedly, the Kashtan/Palma system has two sets of 6-barrel gatlin guns, which enable the awesome firing rate of over 10,000 rds/m. This character is outstanding among its peers.
But, I think the Kashtan/Palma system is far more expensive than its old folk: AK630.
This is said to be from a serial TV drama whose protagonist is a pilot in the PLAAF. Does anyone what is the title of it? So maybe I can look for it in a Chinese DVD/VCD/video store that sells and rents mandarin soap dramas. It shows a lot of things too like the Su-27s, J-7s, etc,.
This is a movie. In Chinese, the name of this movie is like “Up and Away, Flying Leopard”. I don’t know if it has an official translation. But I think you can’t miss this movie by the cover photo on DVD/VCD box.
