It seems an artist friend of mine is somewhat upset that I am getting a bunch of compliments on my work without explaining my process. Just to be sure there are no misunderstandings I am happy to do so.

I build my composition using reference photographs in Photoshop. I also paint from imagination some elements – especially for small details, clouds and landscaping. I build up layers of color and detail a play with positioning of the various elements. One I am satisfied with the composition I use Corel Painter to do the actual paintwork. Here is an example of what a reference photo looks like as compared to the same area in the finished painting.
