air to air missiles like AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder lost roughly half their range when they made a SAM version of them. Maybe it works both ways, with a SAM like HAWK doubling its range at high altitude?
Would then be about 80 km….

Just a thought..
I just had a look at Severodvinsk’s thread: “Visit” to the Gulf, (pictures)
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=31865%5D
and noticed some funny similarities between the modern Kongo class destroyer and the Takao class cruisers of ww2. Look at the bridge structure, stern and vaguely the bow section. I guess the japanese like those lines 🙂
Takao:
I like the Japanese Takao class heavy cruisers, they just look mean!
The new Norwegian MTB Skjold also has a “don’t mess with me attitude” 😎

I once saw one of the Iowa’s in a Norwegian fjord, awesome..
Errr…. where are the images?
The radar on a jet might burn through, I rather doubt an AMRAAM has the power.
I agree on the AMRAAM, but imagine the power of the AEGIS radar… I don’t really know much about radar technology, but I imagine the Aegis is able to focus the radar energy and be able to burn through just about anything within say 50 km…?
I think the radar can “burn” through jamming as the distance between jammer and radar is reduced. I must admit that I haven’t seen this any other places than in techno thrillers, but it sounds likely. Hope someone can confirm this.
I doubt the US Navy ever takes a risk with their carriers. They would have at least one Hawkeye and a couple of fighters on station 24/7. With at least on Aegis cruiser and probably at least two Aegis destroyers in every battle group, they would always control the airspace around the carrier. In these days, they’d probably smoke anything uninvited that comes within 10 miles of the carrier.
The best bet against a carrier is an SSK. I’ve heard more than one story about Norwegian diesel boats surfacing of the bow of an american carrier :diablo:
5 kills and you are an ace.
The ace of aces was Erich Hartman, Luftwaffe, with 352 kills during WW2
Don’t know about the rest of your questions.
SS-N-1 is obsolete antiship missile cruises at like 1000 ft the iraqis modified it for land attack.
they have larger kill capability because of their greater KE nearly 9 times more than cruise missile (assuming they can travel at mach 2.5). Its typically the force from the impact not the warhead that is responsible for most ashm kills u typical 100 kg ashm warhead is only enough damage not sink a vessel. USS cole withstood 500 kgs+ of c4 hiting at the waterline. In other hand 2 ton object moving at mach 3 object hitting a vessel is split apart any hull.
there is very small margin of error with soft kill mechnaism unlike hard kill option most of them are guaranteed to work 99.9%.
Thanks for correcting me on SS-N-1 issue. Was reading SS-N-1, but thinking Scud. I’d better put on the coffe 🙂
I didn’t think about the KE aspect, but wouldn’t it be likely that a small missile like a Standard would rip straight through a ship, without doing much damage? A few years back there was an accidental firing of a Sea Sparrow from a American Carrier. The missile hit the bridge of a Turkish frigate, killing a couple of the crew, but not doing much damage.
I guess the decoys work or they don’t 😀 Guess whose got the latest upgrade wins
No worries. With phase array radar & dozens of HHQ9 missiles, and 16 1-metre-diametre anti ship missile, new PLA destroyer can not do anything without air cover. Aircraft will always beat surface warship by better maneuverability, which means more energy and power, even with old style anti ship missiles.
The advantage of us navy is the whole system of their platforms & weapons, but not the ability of their weapons. In fact harpoon is slow and small, but with better intelligence and command system, it can be more lethal than the much more powerful ss-n-22.
That is what a new navy lack of, no matter indian and Chinese.
But I think Chinese can do better, because the weapons are our own, not just import ss-n-25 form russia.
What if you don’t have aircover? No nearby airbases or no carriers? If the US navy a few years down the road gets seriously cut or even if the US changed path politically and stayed out of the quarrel? The question then would be your ships staying power.
I know it’s not a likely scenario, but consider the US Navy not being involved, it’s a totally different ball game.
I think the Royal Navy would have great difficulty in this situation. Since the Sea Eagle anti-ship missile has been withdrawn from service we are left with Harpoon fired from frigates, subs and Nimrods and the short range Sea Skua for Lynx. Defence cuts mean these are all in declining numbers and the retirement of Sea Harrier will mean they will not receive adequate air defence. We may have the better capability to find and target the threat but I’m doubtful if we have enough weapons at hand to take it out.
My thoughts exactly.
If you ever had to fight without the US Navy, you’d have your hands full. So much for independent action 🙁
there is no such thing as perfect defense US had dozens of patroit batteries thruout kuwait that still didnt stop some dozen are so obsolete SS-N-1 missiles from hiting some targets on kuwait. Also PLAN nor IN or Russian navy (with exception of cruisers) have a vessel with ability to shoot down 2 or more low flying misile with rate greater than 90% as opposed to some western naval DDgs.
actually Luhai i believe was the first plan vessel fitted with 16 missiles probably the decision to do that was influenced by IN fitting 16 urans on delhi its one navy copying the other. I betting taiwan will soon follow that only matter time b4 everyone in asia have vessels fitted with 16 missiles.
its not about how many missiles a vessel carries most western vessel air defense systems can also be used against incoming vessels (SM-2, ESSM) also as israelis demonstrated during yom-kippur war i believe you can win even when ur opponent has more and better missiles than you. Israel navy vessels (most were just fishing trailers modified as missile boats) equipped with gaberial were outgunned and outranged by OSA missile boats but were able to win primarily because they were equipped with crude EW/ECMs that rendered the styx useless i believe more than 20 were launched and not one even came remotely close to hiting a israeli vessel. Also considering how far Electronic warfare systems have progressed, these systems are designed to deal with most salvo attack atleast on paper.
The eastern destroyers can certainly put up a lot of missiles and lead against slow Harpoons. I don’t know how many targets they can engage at on time though..
The Scuds are ballistic missiles, quite a different thing to hit than an anti-ship missile. I don’t remember the speed of these Scuds on target approach, but at least I’ve heard the difficulities of hitting ballistic missiles being compared to trying to hit a bullet with another bullet..
The SAM’s you mention does have a secondary anti-ship capability, but carry very small warheads. Also, they probably need radar gudiance all the way to the target, which means you have to get awfully close unless something else can provide mid course guidiance.
The development of EW/ECM as well as weapons has gone a long way since the Yom Kippur war, just like air-air missiles, the margin of error is much smaller. One mistake and you are going to get hit.
These images are beautiful!
I really like that Flanker Jai, almost made me drool 😀
Keep em coming guys!
Hi PhantomII,
The RIM-7 is being replaced by the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile.
Same thing really, just deadlier..
Just did a quick Google and this page came up

Cheers!
I guess the sub is less visible from the air with black color. The green is probably better in the clear water in the Med. I read somewhere that the WW2 subs in the Med was quite visible at periscope depth or even deeper, from the air.
Anyway, that pink sub……. it’s actually a fairly good idea as it’s bloody difficult to shoot straight when you are laughing your head off! 😀 😀 😀
