NELSAM has received £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a project, Ridley’s Aeroplane.

The project will see the museum work with schoolchildren across the North East to build a static replica of a 1916 Morane Type N ‘Bullet’ monoplane, The project will also tell the story of its pilot, relatively unknown Sunderland hero Claud Ridley and the role of North East aviators.

19 year old Claude Ridley flew the plane with the 60 squadron France in 1916, Sunderland born Ridley went on to become a highly-decorated pilot and spy.

Students will work as part of an extended team and develop hands-on skills, making individual components for the full-sized replica of the First World War aircraft.

The aeroplane will be constructed so it can be easily dismantled then transported by road for display at events commemorating the First World War Centenary, military exhibitions and air shows. It will be accompanied to events by the students who will have researched and produced information on North East aviators to be used on the story boards, posters and hand-outs. They will also have the chance to discuss their roles in the project.

The aeroplane will eventually become part of a permanent WW1 display at the museum

Ivor Crowther, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund North East, said: “The impact of the First World War was far reaching, touching and shaping every corner of the UK and beyond. We’re pleased to support this project which young people explore the story of the First World War through the eyes of a Sunderland hero and create a lasting physical legacy to the contribution of North East aviators.”

The Flight Sim weekend was a resounding success with several hundred people visiting. We think it can be bigger and better – although we now think it should be a one day event – and are planning another for next year possibly around July time. If you would like to take part either displaying or as a trader, please pm me.

Just to get started, here’s our Vulcan XL319 in her new colours.

A small dedicated team led by Ian Rutter has been carrying out a major refurbishment with a paint job that is planned to last for several years and help slow the inevitable corrosion that afflicts all aircraft kept outside. We hope to get her under cover one day but that is going to cost a lot of money.

No mystery Guys. This is indeed G-BAGJ. It was painted in it’s present colours for a military pageant and will be returned to it’s former (civil) glory later this year.

As an aside, Neam was renamed as the North East Land, Sea and Air Museum (Nelsam) last April to more reflect it’s expanding collection of vehicles, fire engines, buses and trams. We didn’t really make enough of a fuss about it at the time but we are definitely re-launching the museum this year. We have some fantastic volunteers who are all pulling together to make Nelsam a great place to visit.

The support we have been receiving from Sunderland City Council has been incredible in the present economic climate and thanks to them, we have a new building for our tram collection and we are also hoping to enlarge the site soon.

I hope you don’t mind me bumping this up the listings but with just a week to go before the book sale, we’d like to give it the widest possible coverage. Please tell all your friends. Aviation related books are flooding in with over 100 donated this week alone. I will be sorting through them all next week and will let you know how many there are. Could be worth a trip.
If you’re looking for a particular book, let me know and I’ll keep a look out for it
