Hi Propstrike,
Don’t disagree that images taken from the public road are to be expected. My point was, that the image copied and pasted by Moggie (I know it is not his own), was taken by someone attending the scene on the runway. This was not a public place – hence my comment. 🙂
Most of the images shown on the various press reports were taken from the fence (albiet inside the airfield, as a soon as the crash gates were opened, a few individuals with cameras walked into the airfield).
Just frustrating – thats all.
The facts:
Peter carried out a full flight in the Hurricane (his first) and then returned to the airfield for a couple of flypasts for me to get some pictures before he landed. His approach was textbook, as was the flair to land, but it appears that the wheels locked up forcing the nose to pitch forward. Thankfully Peter was at very slow speed, and thus the aircraft came to a halt on the blades, relatively quickly. We were quickly on the scene and Peter was obviously shocked but thankfully unharmed. The Hurricane has obvious damage to the prop and proberbly the engine. Both undercarrage doors are damaged, but not seriously. Time will tell how bad the internal damage may be, but she is back in the hangar.
A fantastic effort was made by the assembled ‘help’ to get the Hurricane back on it’s tail wheel, without further damage.
Really disapointed to see that someone who was trusted to attend the scene felt fit to post images so soon.
WOW !! 😮
Indeed Mark V – nice to see her with the covers on. This Hurricane is imaculate in every way. Certainly a crowd pleaser for 2009.
Don’t miss this opportunity guys and girls – you wont get this kind of unique access very often.
The flame colour does indicate a different temperature of the top engine. My guess would be that the top engine has a higher jetpipe temp as the flame is whiter. Could be be a difference in turbine rpm or turbine pressure as result of different engine settings. I guess we need a expert on this one.. I’m sure there’s a Frightning engine buff around here somewhere:)
The top pipe lights up first – hence it is hotter in this shot because it was taken very soon after the second pipe was fired up – that may be the reason (I am guessing).:D
Nice shots. Wish I’d been there.
Seems as though the top engine isn’t working properly – no shocks in the flame. Am I right about that?
There most certainly are shock waves on both pipes.
Nice shots Brian. Good to see they were not ruined by other photographers flashguns (which can be a real pain on night shoots).
Thanks for the comments guys, and glad you like this and the other images on the link. More to come in 2009 🙂
No, it’s the new stealth bomber – hence why it’s not shown in the image:D
Does this count?:D

Wonderful views Darren thanks, I do get to fly and take photos in my line of work however North Scotland is packed with scenery with few aircraft for air to air. So I still have some envy !

Hi Gary,
I flew out of Inverness earlier this year on an air to air with the Highland flying school with one of the Tomahawks they fly there. The weather was shocking, but we got the shots and the scenery was wonderful, even in rubbish weather. Loch Ness is quite a sight from the air!

Absolutely gorgeous stuff, Darren!
Out of interest, what was your ship when shooting the ‘planes out of Old Warden?
vbrgds
Alan
Hi Alan,
Thanks for the comments.
I am very fortunate to have Peter Holloway’s support for my photography, and he quite often flies me in his magister for shoots. The two Stiggies were shot from a super Cub belonging to the QUAX visitors. I would be very happy to shoot your friends subjects when you are next over. Please PM me your details, so we can keep in touch.
Darren
My daughter is just 10 weeks old. I sit her in her chair in my office when I am working on images, and she sits and stares at my cabinet full of aircraft. My wife tells me that this is child abuse! 🙂
The photo shoot would have been organised a long time ago to get pilots, ground crew, photographer and camera ship all in the same place at the same time. The weather could not be organised and hence the naff conditions.
Brian
That is true Brian, but it is sometimes better (and always possible) to re arrange if the weather is not good. I have to say that your shots are really good as always, especially under the conditions.
Different colour ! 😎
Do you know what colour the lorry will be painted in – and will it be authentic.:D:D
I should see you in the next few weeks mate.;)
