RE: Did Bush upset anyone else?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-05-02 AT 07:56 PM (GMT)]Kev35 hit it on the head. The Brits ARE better equipped and trained for the job than the Americans. The American armed forces suffered greatly under Bill Clinton. Anyone who could, left (including most who planned and executed GWII). Only the dregs, inept politicos and those too young or inexperienced to know better remained. Look at the recent events of Operation Anaconda…a classic “hammer and anvil” operation. The only problem was the bumbling American planning staff forgot the “anvil” part and the bulk of the Al Queda forces escaped into Pakistan. If it was not for the Brits and Canadians, the “hammer” part would not have worked either. That lack of professionalism permeates the American command from top to bottom.

    Edit spelling.

DJCross was a dear friend recently deceased due to cancer. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, field service representative on the USS Kennedy during it’s ’75 Med criuse with the then new S-3A and F-14A, modification crew lead for the P-3C Harpoon upgrade at Alameda, and field service during F-117A testing.

You are a true American if…

You can entertain yourself for more than an hour with a fly swatter.
You’ve ever been pumping gas and another customer asks you to check his oil.
You think the Bud Bowl is real.
    Your dog goes “oink!”
You think the Nutcracker is something you did off the high dive.
Your mailbox is made out of old auto parts.
You know how to milk a goat.
Your kids have a three-day old Kool-Aid mustache.
Your TV gets 512 channels, but you go outside to use the bathroom.
You’ve ever stood outside a bathroom and heckled someone inside.
Turning on your lights involves pulling a string.
You have a refrigerator just for beer.
You come back from the dump with more than you took.
Your wife owns a camouflage nightie.
You’ve ever worn cowboy boots with Bermuda shorts.
You don’t think baseball players spit and scratch too much.
You think the Styrofoam cooler is the greatest invention of all time.
You take your dog for a walk and you both use the same tree to relieve yourselves.
The most common phrase heard in your house is, “Somebody go jiggle the handle.”

The problem is that before Sept 11, nobody in charge would believe the airliners would be used as kamikazes. They were still under the belief that the jets would be flown to Cuba and hijackers would issue demands.

Actions taken since Sept 11 are a joke. Multi-billion dollar bail-out of airlines due to bureaucratic indecision during the grounding. Long checkpoint lines to make the public think things are safer.

    RE: No guns needed…

TOKYO (Reuters) – A middle-aged man stabbed to death with an umbrella may have been killed in an argument over a parking space, Japanese media reported on Thursday.

Toshimi Kuwabara, 55, staggered into his 77-year-old mother’s house in Hiroshima, western Japan, with several stab wounds in his face and throat early on Thursday, they said.

Witnesses had heard a car drawing up and a loud argument in the street.

Police said a young man in a navy suit holding a black umbrella was seen fleeing the scene.

Kuwabara was taken to hospital but died an hour later.

    RE: More Canadian stuff

My neighbor is from Alberta, this is another of his…

On the sixth day G-d turned to the Gabriel and said:

“Today I am going to create a land called Canada, it will be a land of
outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall majestic mountains full
of mountain goats, and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with
bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over-looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon.”

G-d continued, “I shall make the land rich in oil so as to make the
inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, and they
shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel “don’t you think you are being too generous to
    these Canadians?”

“Not really,” replied G-d “just wait and see the neighbors I am going to
    give them.”

RE: Why Americans should never be allowed to trave

Have you ever been confronted with “Canadians are just like
Americans. What’s the difference?” Here are *some* answers. (This is
not a put-down of Americans, Brits, or Canadians; just a series of
    observations.)

    Canadians:
Are rather indignant about being mistaken for Americans when
    abroad.
    Americans:
Encourage being mistaken for Canadians when abroad.
    Brits:
Can’t possibly be mistaken for anyone else when abroad.

    Americans:
Care very deeply about civil rights & preserving them; to
    extreme degrees in some cases.
    Canadians:
Couldn’t care less about these things, especially when “I have
nothing to hide.” More concerned about an *orderly* society
    than a free one.

    Americans:
Believe that people should look out for & take care of
    themselves.
    Canadians:
Believe that that’s the government’s job.

    Americans:
Are flag-waving, anthem-singing, and obsessively patriotic to
    the point of blindness.
    Canadians:
Can’t agree on the words to their anthem — *when* they can be
bothered to sing them, that is.

    Americans:
Are deeply religious, or make a strong point of posturing as
    such.
    Canadians:
Are somewhat less religious, and keep it to themselves.

    Canadians:
Do their best to be polite to others.
    Americans:
    Rudeness is more efficient.

    Americans:
Spend most of their lives glued to the idiot box.
    Canadians:
Don’t, but only because they can’t get more American channels.

    Americans:
Love to watch sports on the idiot box.
    Brits:
Love to watch sports in stadiums so they can fight with other
    fans.
    Canadians:
Prefer to actually engage in sports rather than watch them.

    Americans:
Will jabber on incessantly about football, baseball, and
    basketball.
    Brits:
Will jabber on incessantly about cricket, soccer, and rugby.
    Canadians:
Will jabber on incessantly about hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey,
and how they beat the Americans once, playing baseball.

    Americans:
Are loud, boisterous, obnoxious as tourists.
    Canadians:
Are polite, low-profile, sensitive (perhaps even timid) tourists.

    Americans:
Spell words differently, but still call it “English.”
    Brits:
Pronounce their words differently, but still call it “English.”
    Canadians:
Spell like the Brits, pronounce like Americans.

    Americans:
Are afraid to walk the street of their large cities at night.
    Canadians:
Are unafraid to walk the streets of their cities.
    Brits:
Sensibly stay home at night instead of going out.

    Americans:
Cross the southern border for cheap shopping, gas, & liquor in
    a backward country.
    Canadians:
Cross the southern border for cheap shopping, gas, & liquor in
    a backward country.

    Americans:
Tend to think that guns are very cool, and fun too.
    Canadians:
Aren’t quite sure how they work. Safer and easier to make them
    illegal.

    Americans:
Seem to think that poverty & failure are morally suspect.
    Canadians:
Seem to believe that wealth and success are morally suspect.
    Brits:
Seem to believe that wealth, poverty, success and failure are
    inherited.

    Americans:
Are awed by wealth and success.
    Canadians:
Are awed by correctness and mediocrity.

    Canadians:
Encourage immigrants to keep their old ways, and avoid
    assimilation.
    Americans:
Encourage immigrants to assimilate quickly, and dump their old
    ways.
    Brits:
Encourage immigrants to go to Canada or America.

    Americans:
Are disliked everywhere in the world, with the exception of
    Canada.
    Canadians:
Are tolerated everywhere in the world; frequently even liked —
with the exception of America, Somalia, and other places where
    the Airborne have been.

    Canadians:
Endure bitterly cold winters, and are proud of it.
    Brits:
Endure oppressively wet & dreary winters, and are proud of it.
    Americans:
Don’t have to do either, and couldn’t care less.

    Canadians:
Have produced many great comedians, like John Candy, Martin
Short, Lorne Michaels (SNL producer), Jim Carrey, Michael J. Fox,
Michael O’Donohue (SNL writer), Dan Akroyd, and all the rest
    at SCTV.
    Americans:
Think that these people are American!
    Brits:
Have produced many great comedians, but Americans ignore them
because they don’t understand subtle humour.

    Brits:
Are obsessed with the Queen, and royal family peccadillos.
    Americans:
Are obsessed with the President, his family, and even their cat!
    Canadians:
Would gladly settle for Prince Charles having an affair with a
    Canadian girl.

    Americans:
Are justifiably proud of the accomplishments of their citizens.
    Canadians:
Prattle on about how some of those great Americans were
    actually Canadian.

RE: i think this is a disagrement

What’s with the fixation with inanimate objects rather than evil humans? When you see a computer, do you think ‘hacker’. If you see matches, do you think ‘arsonist’. If you see a butter knife, do you think ‘slasher’?

The highest murder rates in the world are in Africa (especially Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique), where the killings are done by machete, knives and clubs. South and Central America (especially Columbia and Venezuela) murder rates follow closely, also with machete, knives and clubs. Russia has a murder rate about 3 times higher than the US and their murders are overwhelmingly by knives and clubs.

Evil exists in the hearts of men. They will use any tool available to commit crimes. Blame the men not the tool they use.

Many in the US view the ICC as a politically-motivated rather than justice-motivated organization. Another objection is ICC championing group rights rather than individual rights. Other key elements the ICC is missing include no secret trials, right to face your accuser, right to appeal and many other rights that exist in the US courts.

    RE: Murders per 100,000

I am interested in where you got your numbers about firearm ownership in the US (seriously, no flame intended). There is a lot of mis-information floating around the media anout the US and ‘wild-west cowboy mentality’.

The numbers by the US Department of Justice put firearms ownership at 80 million out of 270 million (or about 30%). This is way down from the 1930s and 40s where ownership was between 55 and 60% of total population.

Rural and small town firearm ownership is higher than big cities where firearm ownership is severely restricted or prohibited (Washington DC, Chicago, New York).

In those probibited cities, it’s mainly the criminal gangs that have guns and they are the ones who commit the majority of the murders. Funny how criminal gangs refuse to obey the laws prohibiting guns (I guess that’s why they are called criminals). The black market for guns thrives like the drug market.

Persons convicted of violent crimes (all felonies and misdemeanor assault and domestic violence) are prohibited from possessing a firearm (national law since 1994).

All persons wanting to purchase a firearm has to go through a background check (national law since 1994).

Sales between private parties requires a background check in 34 out of 50 states and more states are adopting similar restrictions every month.

Some states have passed laws that prohibit inheritance of firearms.

Ownership of machine guns has been severely restricted since 1934 – that’s right – nineteen thirty four (national law), imposing background checks, a healthy tax, storage safes/vaults, pre-approval to transport outside the home state and suprise inspections by the BATF. It has been illegal to manufacture machine guns for civilian sale since 1984 (national law).

It has been illegal to manufacture or import assault weapons (actually semi-automatic look alikes) since 1994 (national law).

    RE: Crusader Cancelled??

The Fort Sill mafia has not yet acknowledged that they are behind the times. The Army needs to go the way of smart artillery to integrate into the Land Warrior initiative. Net centric warfare integrates the individual soldier (and support such as artillery) into a superior fighting machine. Politics of the Ft Sill mafia believes the number of bar stools in the O Club is more important than winning future conflicts. Such backward thinking is indicative of leaders without foresight or courage. The bright ones probably left the service during the Clinton years and only the dregs remain.

    RE: Crusader Cancelled??

Crusader is logistically cumbersome. It is composed of two 40 ton vehicles and an large support tail. If Nato was still poised waiting for the Soviet hordes to sweep through the Fulda Gap, it might make sense (pre-positioned asset). Where the Army has to quickly deploy (like Afghanistan) it does not make sense. There is not enough airlift available to get Crusader or M109s to a hot spot quickly. Sealift is often too slow (months). That leaves the Army to rely on USAF/USN CAS or towed artillery like the M777. Expect to see HIMARS or similar truck-mounted smart artillery rockets bought for the rapid deployment role.

    RE: Murders per 100,000

I didn’t want to pay for Interpol’s murder stats (per 100,000 population) but here are some from other sources:
    Botswana 80
    South Africa 47
    Columbia 40
    Russia 20
    Holland 13
    US 9
    Germany 4
    France 4
    Belgium 3
    UK 3
    Austrailia 1
Japan 1 (suicide rate of 17)

Most of the murders in the double-digit countries are done by stabbing, hacking or clubbing. Of the US rate 3.5 of 9 is by non-white (primarily gang killings and robbery) while the remaining 4.5 is done by whites (primarily robbery and domestic violence). It’s the evil intent of the human at work, not the weapon.

The sad part is that we will probably see more of this type of assassination by extremists on both sides of the political spectrum (like the South American “Death Squads” of the early 1980’s).
