    ?origional?

    Mr Tweed,

    Here is one for you.

I have a DH89 Rapide which origionally went to NZ as a Dominie. After the war it went to a local airline and then to NSW. It has never been rebuilt but only repaired and worked on incrementaly so that now it bears only some resemblence to the origional airframe. Such as new engines, rebuilt wings, repaired Fus and still has the patina of age. It has always been registered and never for extended periods been grounded.

What would you class it as?

Names seem to be mentioned here and there seem to be implications that all was not done according to the “book”.

If there was any misdemeanor and answers are tendentious it could spell a lot of trouble.

It was open 2 sundays ago and a friend talked to Alan then. There was talk about a “Charatable Trust”. Genna {I am unsure of the spelling}Wilson was there and in a conversation re the Moth Minor she was enthused to restore it so it seem as of at least 2 weeks ago nothing changes.

On a related note, what is the availability in the UK of the smaller length BA bolts. I have seen some for sale on the net but they seem very expensive.

    Roger,
The Scion is a collection of tubes at present but the pobjoy is on it’s way. There are lots of problems with a full restoration including the cruxiform extrusions of which 4 of them make a warren truss as the main spar. These have been got at last so we can move on. This is what I eventually hope for in the jpg,
Unfortunatly Mr Green’s Eagle has gone to Spain and the interest in British light aeroplanes is not reflected as one would hope in some of the collections the UK. This is mine at our strip at Wiseman’s Ferry north of Sydney.

    Megalith,

The disease got me some time ago and the only thing I can say is that my wife has encouraged it. I think she feels if my mistresses are all so much older than her then this romance is harmless.

I am based in Oz, just outside Sydney and at present have 3 flying and 2 more within 6 months of flying. These are Klemm l25 d2 Vh-uur which was origionally built in Germany and used as a mission aeroplane in New Gu. Then British Klemm Eagle Vh-uti which is one of the more common ones with retractable U/C. Then a DH82, a Dh89a and a Comper Swift with a Gipsy engine. There is under long term rebuils a Pobjoy engine Comper and rarest of them all a Short s16 Scion. Hence the name, it was the first of the many.

My mates here have a Sterman, a couple of Fairchild 24 and of course an Auster and Tiger.

We are all quite mad and spend time swapping and fixing up each others mistakes.

Thank you for your input and these sites a great but as you said we are a sad bunch who like to fly slow. I’ve always found you can see more and enjoy the delights of flying at a somewhat slower speed.
I have a couple of old areil contrivances of which my Klemm is perhaps the favourite. Don’t tell the others however!

    Rapide

There is only one Rapide flying in Australia and that is VH-UTV. BGP is being rebuilt in NZ by Colin Smith and will eventually go to Perth with Mr John Ivers. Another Rapide is very close to flying in Melbourne with Mr Maurice Rolfe but that is your lot.

Sorry to hear that, it is a great collection.
Is his wife still alive and what about Alan, how is he taking this?

Thought you may like to see a 1930’s Kings Cup entrant currently being worked on in Sydney.

We hope to get her flying with Pobjoy engined VH-UVC either at the end of this year or the start of next.

    Ozplane,
This is the Eagle at Nowra with the wheels almost retracted.
Hope I have reduced the size of the file enough!

    ozplane,
Eagle, Rapide and Klemm were all flying at the Nowra airshow last weekend. Terrific day and Glenn Alderton took some great photos. The Comper swift with the Gipsy came down by truck and was displayed on the grass. Some aeromodelers went daft with their cameras. We now have the first pobjoy running and as such the second should not take quite so long—5 years.

However the plot is to put the Pobjoy comper back in the air after the gipsy one and then move on the Short Scion. The wings of the Scion were badly corroded but I now have the correct extrusions to remake the warren truss of the main star. The extrusions have been wasted.

The problem of course is funds and time. They are interchangable with a quadratic type equation you know. But I have had some disappointment with our Foxmoth because every time I look at it another problem surfaces. The aeroplane was suposed to have been restored and flyable when we bought it but it nearly killed me on the delivery flight. And so everything touched on it turns to catcus.

Good things however abound and we had a great flyin at our strip at Wisemans a month or so ago with 19 aeroplanes arriving.

Next trip is to the AAAA flyin at Narrandra

    NC 900
Give me the pitch and diameter of the prop and I can perhaps let you know if it is off a Scion, Swift or Swallow.
