I know it’s not strictly old historic but what about the F117 Stealth fighter, it has no compound curves,it is a warbird & getting on for 20 yrs old.
If you go for it a number of companies make a 1/72,1/48 & 1/32 scale models.:)
Tell you what, It’d look superb stood next to Gazelle XX411 at Donny-any takers??
Fair do’s Moggy it wasn’t taken seriously-:) but it sounds like it has potential for a good day- I should consider organising a M.V. event there at sometime as I’d still love to get my friend to take his M4A1 Sherman Grizzly to Donny.
O.k. I know its not Aviation related but it did see action on D-Day with the Canadian 52 armoured div. & its powered by a down-rated Wright Whirlwind engine. 🙂 🙂
There is a photo of a Beaufighter buried on Cleethorpes beach (later blown up as a danger to shipping-something to do with an 18 in torpedo & 8 a.s. rockets perhaps) in Sid Finn’s book Lincolnshire Air War- is it still there?????
I confirmed on Sunday with the museum co-ordinator it is ardox 2814 they used.
Incidendally the Dak is to be completed in wartime BOAC colours-the A/C that actor Leslie Howard was lost in.
The “Jeep & Cheerful” title is not a pun but the name given to the event by the organisers I’m afraid-nowt to do with Aeroventure- they are just hosting it,but word is Doncaster council are organising these heritage days to encourage visitors by allowing free entry to participating attractions-including Aeroventure. If there is a pun they are not mine I’ sorry it appears that way.
so just come along & enjoy:o 🙂 🙂
I must confess I haven’t owned it yet but either way ‘er indoors won’t let me!!:D
RAF Finningley 1974(or’75) I remember arriving at the base & as we drove towards the public area we passed rows of Varsitys, the Beverley sat on the apron & the RAF’s own aircraft and variety outnumbered those in private hands.
It was a time when the Red Arrows flew Gnats, Lightnings,Phantoms,Hunters, Canberras, Vulcans &Victors ruled the day & the only warbird was the Lanc.
It sometimes makes you feel old when you see aircraft in museums that were reletively new back then i.e. Harrier GR1 & Jaguar-6yrs old, Tornado-still a prototype under construction,& Belfasts still wore roundels-aah the good old days eh!
Mind you, some 30 odd years on who at the time would have thought that we should be lucky to see such wonderful varieties & numbers of Vintage Warbirds grace our skies-in many ways the even better new days.;) 😉
Lets be honest, preservation & conservation go hand in hand.however whether it takes weeks, months or even years you cannot beat finding someone elses “junk” corroding away in a field somewhere, taking it off their hands, finding/making replacement parts, toiling almost night & day with sandpaper or wirebrush, taking chunks out of your knuckles, applying primer & topcoats, letting your coffee/tea go cold, not really noticing just how well it is coming together until-bingo there in front of you sits a beautifully restored “treasure” to be appreciated-capped off by the awe & admiration of Joe Public & veteran alike.( I have seen veterans turn into “kids in sweetshops” when they see the end result).
I know there are some out there who would prefer to see an aeroplane in its natural environment i.e. in the air,but spare a thought for the guys who can only restore to static……they put as much love & graft into their work even if the end result is theirs won’t fly.:)
That is a superb little film,loved the Meatbox shots-just a pity they weren’t 616 Squadron’s……….:) 🙂 🙂
Waiting here with baited-breath for her first flight & then an opportunity to see her fly at a display.
I was at Finningley for her last appearence there & she did a fantastic routine, but when she opened those bomb-bay doors with”goodbye-fairwell” I am not ashamed to say I SOBBED!!! A quick look around me & I couldn’t see another person without tears running down their faces-even my wife.
Living so close in flying time to Finningley,Scampton & Waddington I was witness to Vulcan’s flying about for over 30 years & being able to watch them perform at Finningley airshow (especially a 4 ship QRA scramble) was a memory I will always keep.
Many congratulations to the team at Brunty, you are doing a marvelous job, keep it up & keep her flying
A complete Wellington sunk in a peat bog on great whernside…..left foot,black,size11………..:diablo:
Aahh-the photo of the baggage bin fair takes me back to my movers days at Brize Norton….
A very good friend of mine witnessed a complete Airspeed Oxford being buried at RAF Worksop circa late 1940’s early1950’s!!!
While Iam at it don’t forget that RR disposed of great numbers of Merlin engines down a number of mineshafts around Derbyshire.
And I almost forgot the cut up TSR 2’s and jigs in a S Yorks quarry.
I will be honest I do not know off hand what it is called I just know it does what it says on the tin!!! However the DC3 is coming on slowly but surely.
Personally I would like to see it restored in the Eastern Airways colours but due to corrosions love of greedily devouring alclad I believe a few coats of paint will be immanent.
Had the Dak been a C-47 she would have worn 271 Sqn colours as they were reformed at Donny in WWII & took on their 1st Dak prior to moving to Down Ampney.
