So, the plot thickens! ‘631 should by rights have an intake in the name of authenticity – even if it’s only a dummy one. The Marks VI and X definitely had the blower too, there is pictorial evidence.

Perhaps the BoB flight would advise, I’m sure it’s outside of the Official Secrets Act..;)

Yes, well the ‘cabin blower’ is what pressurises the cockpit – that’s why only pressurised Spits have this intake. It’s visible on the mark VI and X as well as the XIX.

I’m intrigued because there’s no need for ‘915 to fly at 40,000 feet any more, so the expense and complication of maintaining the system would not justify it; however, to truly represent the later Mark XIX, she would need the intake. If ‘631 is one of the first 25 built, then she would never have had one.

Yep, I read about Maskelyne recently – he was an illusionist who came up with some clever ideas on disguising tanks and trucks. The scheme was used in the desert war, and was very effective. Stuff that is second nature nowadays, like covering the windscreen glass, eliminating shadows, etc. but also really clever things like inflatable imitation tanks, trucks modified to look like armour, and tanks modified to look like trucks. Crude when close up, but remarkably effective when viewed from an aircraft, for instance.

Back in ’76/77 when I was a DAS member and volunteer worker on the non-flying B-17, we petitioned against the M11’s location and the effect it would have on the runway length.

The motorway got built as planned anyway, so it could be argued that it’s the Dept. of Transport’s fault that the situation of today has come about….

Anyhoo, did anyone catch last night’s ‘Look East’? Lotsa stuff about how wonderful this weekend’s show will be, what with the microlight/goose combination, and the 747, plus some Danish guy with a replica Wright Flyer – so are the Beeb undergoing a reversal of sympathies, and leaving Duxford alone for a while, or was it just a slow news day???

With the greatest respect for the team at Southend, it’s not 426. Having seen it close up, someone has gouged great areas of corrosion out of the lower surfaces of the wings, and then it’s been painted over the top.

Mechanically, she’s good, but the airframe is too far gone to be considered as a restoration to flight project.

I know that what I’ve said will upset some, but I’m only reporting on what I have seen with my own eyes.

Leuchars (Dad was based there) 1965 BoB day. Don’t remember a lot apart from a Scimitar flying, and the based Javelins of course!

Mine is also the SR-71; in this case the one at Alconbury (1985??) I was there with a bunch of mates and the rumour was about that we were going to be treated to a fly-by.

Lots of anticipation as the appointed time neared…then someone spotted it, lurking about over to the East.

A few more minutes while the previous display cleared……then –

    HAROOOOOOOSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

There she was, banking to one side to give us a good look, before returning to Mildenhall.

    In the silence that followed we all lowered cameras and just smiled at each other, in the knowlendge that we had just shared a grand moment;

That silence was then broken by my missus, who declared out loud..

“Nasty,’orrible noisy ugly thing – can’t think WHAT you were all so excited about!”

    They just don’t understand….
