I would like to try bmi’s Trans-Atlantic serice too. I have however flown on an A330 of Aer Lingus to Boston. That was very new, lovely inside, good leg-room. I was very impressed with there aircraft.

    RE: Sheffield City

My local airport is Liverpool and i understand the owners of Liverpool (Peel Airports) have bought an interest in Sheffield Airport. I am quite often in Sheffield for work reasons, as i was today. I usually drive pass and sometimes stop for lunch a the airport. It is normally quiet.

I would go for Amsterdam Schipol and maybe Stansted should be on the list ? If you are also including smaller airports I like London City. I drove past the new Belfast City airport last weekend that looked quite nice, however I flew back home fron “international”

    RE: Viewing at Liverpool Airport

Its also possible to see aircraft at the othe end of the runway. If you travel towards hale there is a road which goes down towards the river and passes the bottom of runway 27. There is an area (unofficial) that people park up where you can get quite good views. However this area is not maintained and therefore not as pleasant as Speke Hall.

You can go along a pathway which the NT put in i think for views over the River Mersey, but it is also ideal for watch aircraft( there are a few wood benches). Particularly good when flights arrive on runway 09 (ie from the west). Have seen Concorde a few times from this position.

    RE: Dissapearing DC 10

We very occasionaly get DC-10s through my local airport(Liverpool). One a few months ago flew a charter to Cardiff and back for football supporters. We have also had a DC10-F from a cargo airline, I think the name was Cargo-Lion. They were impounded for a while due to non-payment of fees !

LAST EDITED ON 05-08-01 AT 10:46 PM (GMT)[p]To be honest I think hiring a car at Liverpool airport and driving to Edinburgh is the quickest and cheapest option. If you flew from Man-EDI its expensive, plus you will have to waste time getting over to Manchester Airport from Liverpool Airport. Its also quite a picturesque drive through the Lake Distict on the way to Edinburgh.

LAST EDITED ON 03-08-01 AT 11:23 PM (GMT)[p]your right there is no direct air service, and trains are not that good either. If it was me I would hire a car on a one-way rental. Should cost about £30.00. You could also fly Easyjet via Belfast. I think they fly BFS-EDI now.

I flew Sri Lankan last year LHR/CMB/LHR. The flight out was on an a340 in the old Air Lanka livery. Comming back the aircraft made two returns to Colombo as the wheels would not retract (even after the first time when the plane went for tests in the hangar !). Our party spent the whole day at Colombo airport or circling round for 2 hours i think, dumping fuel. Eventually the flight was cancelled until the next day when another aircraft comming in from Japan was due. We were all put up in the Colombo Hilton (I think that has also been bombed) and left the next day without insidence.

You may think I would not fly on them again after that but I actually thought the service/food/leg room was good and much better than Virgin on the same aircraft type. Also Sri Lanka is a beautifull country I would love to return one-day when its safer. While i was there I enquired about domestic flights on the island but the Tamil Tigers disrupted this also. This is a shame as overland travel can be very long due to the road system and slow trains

RE: Up and coming regional airports

thanks for the news on Euroceltic. I had heard something about these proposed services, but i never get too excited until the plane actually lands ! You read/hear plenty of stories that never come to anything, but i hope this does happen, Waterford has been served before and is popular and a Liverpool-London service is very important.

RE: Up and coming regional airports

It seems that certain regional airports such as Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle Glasgow and Edinburgh do very well. The majority of the others have a difficult time getting airlines to show an interest in them as they tend to concentrate on the above. LBA seems tobe doing quite well as is Southampton and Bristol, dont know too much about Cardiff. The smaller airports suffer and many, such as my local LPL have lost a consistant link to the Capital. We are quite lucky here as Easyjet have put faith in the airport, but before this many airlines BA in particular just said there was not enough demand. Easyjet now carry more passengers from LPL to Belfast and Amsterdam than BA does from MAN so I rest my case !

I think its important that that the smaller regionals are helped and develope as it benefits their local areas.

p.s I wonder if the loss of London links to regional airports would be allowed in France?

RE: What does every1 think of teesside??

I have flown into Tees side once from Manchester on the ICI charter which operated (it may still do ?) I used to work for Amex Travel and we had the ICI account. I also flew Tees side-Humberside once (a very short hop, but quite a long drive) with Air UK, they no-longer do this route, not sure if anyone else has taken it over. My local airport is Liverpool, I think MME simular as it has a larger neighbour NCL and LPL has MAN. What MME needs is Easyjet or Go or Ryanair to use it as a regional base. LPL figures have gone through the roof since Easyjet set up a base.

I think we may see more of this, I also believe there are probably more benefits with the name change for the city of Liverpool from a tourism point of view
