As an independent nation Bangladesh has the right to do whatever it pleases with it’s defence force. If anyone says otherwise then how would he take it if I say “Your country shouldn’t purchase Su-30 or Rafale’s because you dont need it” or something along the line.
A modern and strong defence force is one of the most important thing for an independent nation.
These F-7’s are a buffer until the government get’s hold of JF-17 or something along those lines.
The govt is also looking at purchasing advance long range SAM’s as air defence from the gound is important and we lack the advance missiles.
We have got a sophisticated C4I system and gradually the plan is to build an air defence network throughout the country to protect the important installations.
Also we purchase Mi-17’s every year as we use them in UN missions. The helicopters have a seperate budget (3-4 helicopters are purchased every year) so it’s enough for now.
Pakistani officials claim that the Bangladesh Air Force will be the first external customer for the JF-17.
The Bangladesh government is looking at modernising and expanding the whole armed forces including the BAF with advance aircraft. It displayed interest in various aircraft including JF-17, Gripen, MiG-29MRCA and Su-30MK. It wants one type of medium-tech aircraft type like JF-17 and one high end aircraft type such as the Su-30MK to form it’s new defensive and offensive squadrons and perhaps replace the older F-7 models.
Govt procuring 16 Chinese F-7 jet fighters with $ 93.60m
Govinda Shil
To accomplish Forces Goal 2020, the Bangladesh government is procuring 16 Chinese F-7 jet fighters at a cost of US$ 93.60 million, said a reliable source.
The aircraft will land in Dhaka’s military airfield flying from China via Myanmar, sometime next month. The fighter planes will be used for air defense purposes. They are equipped with airborne interception radars.
The features of the fighters could be compared with Russian made MIG 29, which is multi functional military aircraft and expensive.
Each of these fighters will cost US$ 5.85 million, according to an AFX (news agency) report.
Negotiation with the Chinese government had started nearly three years ago and continued until last year when a deal was finalised.
Bangladesh government will pay the amount, of which Tk 5.0 billion will come from Bangladesh Air Force budget. In a unique instance, Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh Navy are also contributing to this purchase, the source added.
Parliamentary standing committee on defense is currently reviewing the Forces Goal 2020, fist time designed in the history of the country’s national security.
The Forces Goal assesses the strength of the country’s enemy forces and advises appropriate measures. Bangladesh will continue to add strength to its air force by procuring more fighters. These F-7 jets are mostly defensive in nature and are able to carry four missiles each.
Bangladesh Air Force is comprised of six squadrons, of which four are defensive and two offensive, said the source. These squadrons require reshuffling, as they are equipped with old fighters such as MIG 21 and old-type F-7 and scanty arsenals, the source pointed out.
Some 20 pilots and 30 technicians are being trained in China to operate these aircraft. Out of these 16 jets, four would be used for training purposes, and, therefore, are equipped with two cockpits.
The source claimed that China was giving huge discounts for this purchase as a goodwill gesture. According to him, the actual market price of such a jet will not be less than US$ 10 million.
The fighters are featured with radar warning receivers, heat sensors and multi target acquisitions.
“We need more aircraft that can be used for air strikes,” the source said adding the country also needs more surface-to-air missiles, considering its geopolitical location.

I don’t know if you guys remember but in some aviation magazine their was an article on the modernisation of the Bangladesh AF. The article stated that the Koreans are trying to market their T-50’s apart from other military equipment to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Navy purchased a $100 million modern frigate [the most advance of its type in the subcontinent at present] and a few patrol vessels so I wouldnt be surprised if BAF purchased the Korean T-50 as BD and RoK have very good relations politically and militarily.
y do they want a/c for peace keeping missions anyway? are there any bangladesh personal in active un peace keeping missions?
also, peace keeping missions are very expensive, can bangladesh really afford it when its own ppl need the money so badly?
Bangladesh is the largest or second largest contributor to UN Peacekeeping operations. Please read up on that on the Bangladesh Army website http://www.bangladesharmy.org – http://www.bangladesharmy.info/inter/un.htm and UN site.
And plz no guesses!!! You guys are guessing BAF will go for MiG-29’s, F-7MGs and what not….until the official word gets out please dont write anything speculative because it confuses people.
You guys seriously make me laugh at your ignorance. ๐
SabreAce,
the point with this is that it would appear the Tweets were never bought in 1976 when transferred to the PAF from USAF stocks. They must have been supplied under an MAP/MDP programme with no money changing hands at the time. This transfer of 19 to Pakistan, so they can then pass them on to Bangladesh, is just paperwork/bureaucracy catching-up with reality.
Incidentally, each T-37B is valued at $20,374.60…strange figure but that represents 10% of the original cost in 1957-60 when these were procured by the USAF.
Bangladesh received 12 T-37B direct from USAF stocks in a similar manner back in 1995 when each aircraft was valued at $167, 935.
I assume the PAF are continuing with their T-37C and just passing-on the surviving B models to Bangladesh.
Best regards

Steve I think you are probably on the money here, though BAF will use these for a short term because they are thinking about replacing the T-37’s they have got in service currently because they are looking for 12 new jet trainers according to Bangladesh Military officials and some aviation mags.
Bangladesh’ MiG-29s are for sale since the summer of 2002. They might be flown occasionally to keep them airworthy, but they are not any longer operational. The MiG-29 proved too costly to operate in such small numbers, and funds to buy more (and then retire either the F-7 or A-5 completely) to make the operating cost a bit more worthwile were never found.
Exit Bangladesh as a MiG-29 user.
I own a house right next to the Airbase where the BAF MiG-29’s are based at and I still see them flying so why are you saying they are not operating them?
Yes once they were up for sale but now they wont be sold because BAF wants to maintain a minimal strength until we purchase we aircraft from Russia or China.
Some of the stuff written in this forum makes me laugh because a lot of the members think they are some kind of expert on Bangladesh when they dont know jack.
Sorry about that but you need to respect my country if you [any of you] want respect for your country in return.

โDon’t forget the frigate they sold to Bangladesh.โ
I had been mentioning South East Asia but thanks for reminding me.
It does make me wonder if they will market planes there like the KT-1 or A/T-50.
โI expressed a long time ago on this board that S Korea would hit the world’s military market like they did shipbuilding and automobiles.โ
Youโre not the only one that thinks that.
โIn aviation, if there is one country that can push into the low end niche that China has built for itself, it will be th S Koreans. Imagine Western based tech at Far Eastern prices (well not Japanese prices.) This is one highly competent state backed with a formidable technical base.โ
South Korea could really start to carve out a market in the region and across the world.
โSE Asia is an obvious place to start.โ
South Korea exported numerous equipment to Bangladesh including the frigate, patrol boats and electronic equipment.
The Bangladesh and Korean govt also signed MoU’s regarding logistics, support, intelligence and ToT of equipment. The Koreans invested heavily in Bangladeshis EPZ’s too, they take up 45% of Bangladesh’s total FDI even beating traditional allies such as JAPAN and CHINA.
BAF MiG-29s
Bangladesh is trying to unload their MiG-29s because they are considered too expensive to run. Cambodia would fare no better with theirs.
Actually Bangladesh will continue to operate the MiG-29’s alongside its F-7M’s until formidable replacements are found. I live right near the air base and I see them fly over loudly over my house often. ๐
Bangladesh Army
They are from Bangladesh Army.
Yes, thanks Usman. ๐ BTW does anybody know what kind of equipment the Bangladesh Army Generals were looking for at the IDEAS 2004 Defence Exhibition?
WWII
Their is a WWII cemetry/war memorial in South Eastern Bangladesh [Chittagong] for Allied troops including British and Bangladeshi forces. But I doubt any wrecks survived the tropical jungles of Bangladesh-Burma.
Bangladesh Air Force
Though the BAF is a medium sized air force, does anybody have more Bangladesh Air Force aircraft?
