Heh heh, Cope Thunder seems to be only an excure for this round the world trip 😀 The pacific route is definitely shorter, and indeed that was how the IAF deployed 2xIL-76 [including K2665] for Co-op Cope Thunder 2003.

I bet 100 bucks that the group is going to return via the pacific, inorder to establish a around-the-world with AAR record of sorts for the IAF.

the size of refueling capable a/c *today* is about 40 su30 and a unknown number of jags & m2k.

you forgot to the IN Bears 🙂 The MiG-27 upgrade was slated to include AAR as well, but when recently the first proto flew no mention was made of this in the press.

How do you pronounce “Mushshak” – which i believe is the correct spelling of the aircraft.

Days of thunder: IAF topguns fly past

    CHIDANAND RAJGHATTA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 2004 12:34:24 AM ]

WASHINGTON: The IAF is off to Alaska for Cooperative Cope Thunder, its second joint air exercise with the United States Air Force.

The IAF group, ten aircraft in all, will enter Canada on July 2 and reach Alaska on July 7 for exercises that are slated to begin on July 15.

“The IAF has never been on such a journey and we just want to be careful getting our planes and equipment across safely,” a senior IAF official said.

“This is a big honour and a big debut for us,” the official said.

The IAF is in an upbeat mood after USAF officials showered high praise on the Indian service following the Gwalior exercises, crediting it with excellent skills and equipment.

“The Gwalior Cope Thunder was an eye-opener for them but we also learnt a lot and hope to see and learn even more at Alaska,” the IAF official said.

The IAF threw its top-of-the-line fighter planes, including Sukhois and Mirages, at the USAF in Gwalior. The Jaguars are of relatively older vintage, but officials said they still remained very relevant.

The Indian squad has been drawn from bases in Gorakhpur and Ambala, and among the pilots are the top guns of the IAF, including some young flight lieutenants and flying officers.

There is also a large continent of technical and maintenance crew that keep the aircraft fit to fly.

The exercises will take place at the Eyelson Air Force Base in Fairbanks in Central Alaska, with the US squad drawn from the Elmendorf AFB.

A glittering function was organised to flag off the aircraft.

Besides a number of Air force dignitaries, Air Chief Marshal K Krishnaswamy and Air Officer Commanding in-chief, Western Air Command, Air Marshal S P Tyagi were also present on this occasion.

Addressing the air staff, Krishnaswamy reposed his confidence in the ability of the air warriors to participate in an international exercise in a professional manner.

He advised the pilots participating in it to fully exploit the learning opportunity.

Air Marshal Tyagi flagged off the aircrafts in a colourful ceremony.

Air Commodore, L K Malhotra, Air officer Commanding, Ambala Air Force Station expressed confidence that the pilots would put up a good show and gain invaluable experience.

Group Captain (GC) S J Nenodkar is leading the Jaguar fleet while GC Shouvik Roy is heading the IL-78 and GC Mohanti is leading the IL-76 aircraft.

Any confirmation of JQ-xxx Jaguar IS? And exactly how many IMs do we have – considering only 10-12 were acquired in the first place.

The Mi-17 is as good as any force-multiplier in the kind of terrain the Pakistani and Indian Armies operate. It is the “right stuff” for mainatining their Siachen and LoC posts.

I wish we could get that pretty nose job for IAF Hips 😉

PS: Isnt the second photo from “Shangri-La Resort” from Skardu? They have a real crashed DC-3 there which now houses a coffee shop. 😮

Now talk of quality really upsets us Indians, because we have never been acknowledged for the quality focus in all spheres of our lives. okay okay I am stretching it a bit 😀 :p

Attached a pic of HAL MiG-21 Bison wing root – you can clearly see the rivets and panel joints. Normally we cant see the rivtes in photos, but here you can becuase they have been painted red by the factory. 😮 The other photo is of a HAL MiG-27ML.

When I first saw a Mi-17 – that to Mi-17-1V – I was struck by the skin which is riveted. This was in sheer contrast to the ALH Dhruv, which was okay except for the visible panel joints in some places.

But know what? It doesnt matter if the Mi-17 has super smooth skin, because the customer is buying it becuase it is cheap and gets the job done without hassles – and not becuase it is the 8th wonder in the world.

I have joined the flame war now 😎
