For the MKIs, where do the back-seaters come from?

um, why should they be coming from a process different from the pilots?

mm i thought that all No.20 jocks are qualified first on the No.24 birds. There are various ways to get to No.24. but there is only one way to get to No.20 and thats via No.24. I donno how No.30 will work.

That was how it was when the Lightnings were raised, once the number of SU units goes up I wonder how long this method can be sustained. For 3 MiG-29 squadrons, one of them has been designated as an OCU – the one based at Pune. Keeping the 24 Sqn as a first step to the uber-SU would seem logical.

The C-27J makes real sense if you are already a C-130J operator

I find this group of aircraft – C-27/G222, C-295/235, An-74 etc – extremely interesting. Here are some good pix.

Is this aircraft related to the DHC-4 Caribou?

Thats good info that you have posted asp. thx.

In an interview Alexey Fedorov once remarked that the IAF pilots with MiG-29 experience found it easier to switch to the Su-30. Not surprising considering how similar the two are in construction.

A real problem in the IAF is the “ulta pulta” artificial horizon issue when jocks like Flt Lt Gaurav Chibber shift from western to russian types and vice versa. In this particular case the pilot shifted from Jaguar to MiG-29. He died in a MiG-29 crash, and his aircraft was recovered in an upside down position. ๐Ÿ˜ก ๐Ÿ™

That’s correct. The Hawks Sqn were formerly flying MiG-21s

Thats not what I mean flex; the pilots who flew the MiG-21s are not the same who got the Su-30s. The whole squadron is reconstituted in such a case.

I was referring to the stages that all/most Su-30 pilots have to go thru. The syllabus is common for fighter jocks up till the basic jet training phase, after which the MiG stream (21/29) pilots take up the Iskra while others (Jaguar/Mirage-2000) go to HJT-16 Mark-II. However, all fly the MiG-21 in the next level. I assume that there are subtle differences in their advanced training course flown in MiG-21s that separate the streams pilots take up for the rest of their career.

I am not sure where the Flogger drivers fit in.

AFAIK the Su-30 jocks are mostly from the Iskra->MiG-21->MiG-29 stream of pilots.

from Indian Express article on saras flight –

Krishnaswamy said Indian MiGs fared well in an exercise with the US Air Forceโ€™s F-16s. โ€˜โ€˜They performed well, despite being of an older vintage.โ€™โ€™
