If commonality is so important, why not adopt the β€œZhuk-MEh” radars that have already been developed with the Mig-29K and upgrade their existing Mig-29s with it too. Then they get commonality and a plane on time.

Good point Garry, but perhaps this news indicates what plans the IAF has for its MiG-29 upgrade i.e. they are already lobbying for a N011M-type system for their MiGs?

In the Indo-Pak context the biggest problem with using aircraft for nukes is that it isnt as simple as it sounds. I think most tend to think of dropping a nuke as only a matter of sending some jets over the border and coming back after a bomb toss.

For a nuke mission, an airforce would have to gather total air assets numbering a minimum of 30-40 along with the nuke carrier. This number sounds limited considering the size of the two air forces, but in practical terms it is very difficult to organise. And on top of these resources have to be marshalled for a large period of time – a couple of hours at least.

In the Indo-Pak context conventional packages have never been more than 5-6 at a time. For a nuke strike youll also need reliable backups that are in the air in friendly air space simultaneusly.

You need aircraft for EW, SEAD, Air Superiority and what not and even if one component fails the entire mission is in danger is in jepordy. Little can be worse than your nuke getting shot down and landing on the wrong place….

I go “eek” when I look at numbers involved in the Israel-Arab wars – I guess that it was possible there because of the smaller area of the entire theatre of war.

    Victor,

    Where was these models displayed?

The buddy IFR is done via the standard russian pods – you dont need the Sargent Flecher system for that. The latter anyway is used to give a probe capability in the form of a pod to aircraft without it.

What are the roles that an air force SF unit can perform better than their army counterparts?

Laser designation and protection of AF aircraft on foreign lands would make sense.

Oops, the Gondola tank is not found in the A-5s but in the F-6s – my mistake. But I still need basic info on this modification. Looks like a blended tank you find these days in F-16Is et al…

    Arthur,

I have many pictures of PAF A-5s without the underwing tanks. But yes, i do think they are a necessity while attempting anything other than photo shoots.
