Name one missile where the seeker didn’t use the full diameter of the body

    i get the point

The SD-10 has … slightly greater diameter, suggesting an antenna even larger than the R-77’s.

All missiles are tapered or conical in the front. Hence the diameter of the body does not indicate a larger dish.

The Lancer is no “Attack Chopper” but it should be good enough for terrorists equipped with small arms. Also, they are not be used against any ‘rebel’ armies – like say, the LTTE, but for defence and attacking only small groups.

The Indian Army extensively uses the Cheetahs for CASEVAC, Recce, AOP etc and the Lancer is a way of ensuring that it performs these jobs better.

In that sense it is pretty ok for Nepal for example. For anything else there are the Mi-8/17s and ofcourse the Hinds.

Lancer could have been employed in the Kargil War, given its unmatched altitude capabilities.

thought this might be relevant here:

As far as ground attack turbo-props are concerned, they have been replaced by helicopters like the Huey and this. They are cheap and much more flexible.

Pix of HAL’s Lancer Counter-Insurgency helicopter. In service with the Indian Army and (soon?) the Nepalese Army.

It is equipped with 2×12.7 mm MGs plus 2×3 rockets (57 mm?).

Compared to the conventional Cheetah (Indian Lama), the bubble canopy is reinforced:

In operation it can offer protection to a helicopter which is despatching troops on the ground:

It is equipped with IR flares (elp will like these! 😉 ):

    Haleyoneshoemak,

Nothing personal, but can you please write better subjects for your threads in the future?

For example, this thread could have been titled:

“Over 300 Chinese scientists in work in NASA”

    …or something similar.

You might say that I should not open your threads at all if its so much of a problem, but then I dont want to miss out if one day you actually post something important.

    Thanx

The only pic I have of a military version.

Check out UB-57 rocket pod! 😎 Also the An-32 style canopy on the port side.

The telemetry version of the the IL-76 is known as the IL-76SK or Be976.

IIRC the chinese have mounted (or plan to) a dish on the An-12.

Quite a few aircraft have flown with a surveillance/AEW radar in a rotating disc above the fuselage. Name them, there are at least 7 but your quizmaster will happily agree he’s not infallible.

Jeroen has got the E-2, E-3 and P-3AEW, Transall correctly adds the EC-121 and Hercules to that list. The Yak-44 never flew, and the E-1 didn’t have a rotodome but a fixed housing in which the antenna rotated.

    I want two more.

The Il-76 in both A-50 and 976 (No Il- prefix or anything, it’s a range support and telemetry aircraft) form, and the An-72 in An-71 form are both correct. Of course, i just thought of at least one more…

BAe Hs748M (or ‘Avro’ as it is better known in India) 😎

Thx for your input Art. I guess Boeing mil conversions would be nice, but they do cost a bomb – lets just hope that the IAF gets more IL-78MKIs in the future.

What about the VC-10? The IAF tested with it briefly when we called it to India (just like the lease of the Russian A-50). Looks nice to me but it seems that the IL-78 was given preference. Is it in production still?

The IL-78s are based in Nagpur, which is near Pune where the Jag-IMs and Su-30s are based. Explains the number of pictures we are getting of them together 😀

For now I believe that the following squadrons will train for IFR:

    1 Sqn – Mirage-2000 – Gwalior
    6 Sqn – Jaguar IM – Pune
    7 Sqn – Mirage-2000 – Gwalior
    20 Sqn – uber-fighter 🙂 – Pune
    24 Sqn – uber fighter’s little bro – Pune

While not ackowledged in the press yet, i myself saw a Mirage-2000TH equipped with a probe during a flypast on Air Force Day. Too bad i was waychin thru naked eyes and there were no pix from the press to confirm it. 😡

Picture *Challenge* for all: Any pictures of Malaysian MiGs hooking up with KC-130s?

Isnt the prodn of C-160 done decades ago?

Any opnions on the An-140? Nice looking aircraft but lacks a ramp; a strict no-no for mil use. A rival for the ATR series.

The CASA CN-235 and CN-295 are also pretty nice…is it better than the G-222?
