Infact they had an exercise in 2003 as well when they overflew CIS republics, Afghanistan and Pakistan to fly into the Indian ocean.

Tu-160s will be flying for an exercise in the Indian ocean soon …

Which Pakistan Army regiments are currently equipped with Ballistic missiles? I read “155 Composite Rocket Regiment” in one page but there is no other source.

ray it is wrongly reported; IIRC it is 80 kms.

From The Hindu, on third test

Might be kinematic range from static platform. 80 Kms should be max range from altitude and speed.

You gotta give credit where it is due.

Those guys flew 200 Km in night without visual cues without or minimal bombing experience, avoided detection, landed bombs in general target area, and made it back safely. They had a single engined civilian aircraft with no mil-spec sights for dropping payload.

And we are dishing them for bein unable to destroy protected/hidden hi value assets?

Is this also why even mid air refueling probes are common (eg: IAF IL-78MKI, Malaysian C-130 refueler).

All Soviet aircraft we built like that… call it wishful thinking or forward planning – in the eventuality of conflict with the West, any quickly over-run/occupied territory and hence equipent could be used to service the Soviet aircraft… Fuel, Oxygen, tow-bars etc

Apologies for the off-topic pics – they’re just to illustrate…
Russian Il-76, Ottawa 1990… Canadian Forces cart – hiding under wing (although they did bring their own tow-bars for the MiGs)
Ukraine MiG-29, Trenton 1992…. Canadian Forces cart

The prototype in question flew with MiG-31 engines?

Which prototype? A lot of sources claim that two prototypes were completed in two different configurations (one of them potentially being the 1.42 design). There is physical evidence to support this theory-the fact that the canards on the 1.44 appear to have been lifted from a different aircraft as they don’t “fit”. Anyway, the 1.44 flew twice before being forgotten about for a time. I believe MiG stated that it might continue flying in the near future to support further design work by MiG regarding next-generation fighters.

IMHO the biggest competitor to Su-34 customers outside Russia (India and China) is the Su-30. The only true advantage remains in range and comfort. We dont know the price viz-a-viz MKI either. Radar also remains an issue.

For a low level flight at night at near supersonic speed through a few ex soviet republics and through afghanistan to a target near the Pakistan border the Su-34 would probably be much better than the less manouverable larger aircraft the Russians have to hand, but on most other operations like supporting troops in action in chechnia I would prefer larger aircraft that could stay on station much longer with a relatively light load of guided weapons… a few of those new LGB-250s and maybe half a dozen 1,000kg or 500kg sat guided bombs could be carried internally on any of the big three (22M3, 95, 160).
