Afaik, the marines have already done CSAR with the F-35B and it went well.
You mean that the Marines trained CSAR with the F-35B, not actually done CSAR, right?
Hmmmm, how did we end up discussing the Gripen E in this topic?
The chances of it nailing a Canadian contract are nil… Unless the competition is something Chinese… Might has well transfer these last few pages to the Fin competition topic?
Regardless, though, the Saab brochure’s weapon systems page lists it as being able to carry only 3 external fuel tanks, so that’s probably the configuration that is available now for the Gripen NG.
That was taken from the 2009 Norwegian presentation, an old doc, from around 2014 SAAB brochures have ditched the twin belly wet stations.
Where does it say it was with 4 BVR and 2 WVR missiles?
Edit: Regarding images of the NG with tanks, the snark in me wants to say “that’s because it hasn’t flown yet”. But it’s really because Saab knows how unattractive it’d be to computer-generate an image of their max range configuration, i.e. all loaded up with fuel tanks leaving only the wingtip and outboard pylons for weapons. So they don’t. And guess what, the configurations they do generate are not going to reach the max ranges they talk about.

If he doesnt know, he doesnt know.
Off course he doesnt know, because from the three listed aircrafts all of them are made in countries far, far, far, far away from Sweden, not one of them is the future mainstay of the biggest country on Swedens borders, actually the biggest (in size) country in the entire planet, right across the pond in front of Oland and Gotland, right?
Nevermind that the chances of the other two discussed aircraft´s making an apearance in Northern Europe for the foreseable future are nil…
Because?
Because you dont come to an Aviation Forúm and start “hinting” to an aerospace engineer?
Cheers
MS21 is what Gripen C uses today.
No
MS2 is the operational upgrade and combat enhancement package that the Gripen C/D is receiving in 2016/2017, MS21 was a description for the evolved Gripen that turned out into the Gripen E/F.
It should be crystal clear that this is a political decision and not something guided by operational needs. The current government is attempting to meet its political promise and may still order F-35’s in the future citing a competition and money saved by having it. As I’ve mentioned, if the government was ideologically opposed to the aircraft they would have made any future F-35 significantly harder by walking out of the project. They had that opportunity and paid to maintain Canada’s partner status.
This.
The gnawing teeth of the RCAAF high ranks could be heard this side of the Atlantic… 😀
I´ll get me hat
They have not yet shared whether they will pursue an FMS or a DCS route. My guess would be the latter since their was some talk about them negotiating directly with Boeing.
And the actual cost of the deal wouldnt be plastered on the FMS site for every one to see? :dev2:
My curmudgeon evil twin is taking control of my key publishing acount…
The present CF18s might be able to go through to 2025, how many other countries will still be flying Hornets then and what support will Boeing be giving them?
2025?
The US Navy/Marine Corps, the Spanish Esercito Dél Aire, the Ilmavoimat, the RAAF, the Schweizer Luftwaffe, etc, etc, etc. Heck, by that time i wouldnt even be surprised to find out that the Turks, the South koreans and the JASDF are still fielding one or two Phantom´s!
Does Canada want to be the last “serious” air force operating the F18 Hornet as its main FJ weapons system?
The classical Hornet will be fielded in numbers by the likes of the Marine Corps and the Spanish Air Force into the thirties and god knows if the swiss voters dont disrupt the next Schweizer Luftwaffe competition like they´ve did so often in the past (remember those wonderful A-7 “Swiss Corsairs”? Yeah…).
Cheers
Maybe you should wait until the neonazis reconquer europe and join them again. Seems to be your shtick
Can you point one single Western European country run by “neonazis”? No?
Can you point one single sentence from Swerve in wich he condones any simpathy for “neonazis”? No?
Can you actually explain such a stupid remark? No?
I’ve thought so.
OP was speaking in generalizations, the F-15 is one of the best in transonic acceleration. I would suspect the Typhoon, Su-35, F-22 have superior transonic acceleration similarly equipped.
I doubt that the Mig-31 is in the same league, different design drivers.
Oh, i see, thanks.
Long gone are the days that EFT were simple aluminum cylinders. As Djcross stated, EFT are expensive, need maintenance (entire depot and maintenance units at Ogden, Luke afb- http://www.luke.af.mil/News/ArticleDisplay/tabid/3070/Article/359987/afso21-changes-lukes-external-fuel-tank-roles.aspx ,
The newest EFT are composite, some incorporate RAM. To reinforce the point that EFT being called “drop tanks” is increasingly a misnomer, we have:
the USN incorporating the IRST 21 in the FPU-13 external fuel tank http://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stories/u-s-navy-approves-production-for-super-hornet-irst/Considering the space premium on legacy fighters, it will be interesting to see if other nations start incorporating EFT mounted sensors/countermeasures.
My favorite was the Matra JL-100 drop tank/rocket pack, it was a mix of a rocket launcher with a drop tank in the back… Rockets and fuel tank, wonderful combination, when fired it should be scarier has hell… for the pilot i mean…
And the Matra JK-200? I dont think it was ever produced but it would have been beautiful, 18 SNEB 68 mm rockets, fuel tank in the back and four 500 lbs bombs!

The US is more important to ensure Finland’s security than Sweden (who cannot even defend herself); thus the most likely winners (in order of probability) will be:
1. F-35
2. SH
3. Gripen ERafale and Typhoon are out; too expensive, and no reliable security partners.
The article says, what everyone around here has been saying for a long, long time, its a straight one between the F-35A and the Gripen E.
“Valet skulle då stå mellan F-35 och Gripen.”
I am no expert on acceleration and such things, but I am surprised to hear this; I would have thought the F-22 and probably also the Typhoon would out-accelerate the F-15?
Dont forget the Mig-31 and i wouldnt discount the latest Flanker iteration.
