I can not believe its been a year from the last update on this thread, sorry!

Research on the history of the aerodrome is still ticking on however I have also been pulled into researching the whole Special Operations Executive (SOE) operation in WWII which has a little slowed up the aerodrome side.

I will do a follow up on the aerodrome soon.

I should also let everyone know that I instigated establishing a Barton & District History Group… the first meeting is to be held in the village hall on the 31st May.

    Barton & District History Group
    Thursday 31st May 2012
    7.30pm
Barton Le Clay Village Hall (MK45 4JY).

Everyone is welcome and I hope we can establish several long term project which will include the villages aerodrome.

more information on this is on the village website… http://www.bartonleclay.org/

reports say its Red4 but the name I have seen mentioned is the pilot of Red8 so neither is fact.

Which ever I wish the best for the pilot.

I have done some research into this aircraft because of its links back to Barton and a 3rd party.
From the documents I have (relating to the original design and subsequent discussion between Goldfinch & Latimer-Needham) the reproduction built at Lasham (commissioned in 2000, BGA 4757 now at Flixton as I guess you know) was fairly accurate as it was built under the guidance of Bill Goldfinch/John Best (& Tony Rolt) from a draft of the original plans , this version was adapted in a small way to speed up production an meet modern standards required to fly.

I have a copy of the reproduction build footage if that’s any help.

Interesting you say that as I tracked the prototype Luton Minor back to a farm in Anstruther… its also not widely published but CH Latimer-Needham was using a flying flea he owned for the basis of the Luton Minor prototype built here at Barton in the Clay (1935) which he modified (suspension being built by Grice & Young)

question in interest of playing devils advocate….

Do people appreciate the Shuttleworth Trust for different reasons?

In the past the trust has steered the site and collection along lines of a living aviation ‘Goodwood’. Is the trust changing direction and looking at the more locative arena of say IWM?

With the ongoing reorganisation of the the trusts estate (both the historic and academic operations) what options could the trust consider to retain and bolster visitor numbers?

    Interesting reading…..

in OW’s own words… “The Collection is famous for its regular flying displays. During the season, all of the airworthy aircraft are flown in displays, alongside visiting aircraft from other operators and from other Services, re-creating flying during the Edwardian period, the First World War, the peacetime years of the twenties and thirties and the Second World War. Modern aircraft are also a regular feature and provide an intriguing contrast with the veteran and vintage types....”

OW is not a million miles away from us, and a member of my family has worked for the trust for many years in a hands on managerial role so I’m always keen to support the trust. The acquisition of any aircraft has to be good news, especially if it can generate interest in the collection as a whole much as this thread has done. This all said as member of the public (my interest in aviation is of the engine-less form primarily and then in terms of engineering and not flying!) I have to think that this aircraft has pushed the the collection in a direction that is not what’s it so highly respected for… preserving vintage British aviation and automation.

Another concern I have is the increasing ‘trend’ of re-branding exhibits to fit the collections narrative… surely a restoration by nature requires the aircraft to be restored to what it once was not what looks good for the photographers!

The Shuttleworth Trust has always been a little slow to to respond to the pace of modern electronic media but lets hope they make a statement soon that put an end to speculation and allows everyone to appreciate the new aircraft regardless of the politics behind its purchase.

Various sources claim that the complaint has come from the wife of a member of Tunstall Parish Council.

If this is case it’s a little hypocritical to say the least.

    There is always one!

I work in the professional motorsport arena and we have seen a similar attitude from people that buy house near race circuits and rally venues… it amazes me that people really buy houses in these locations knowing full well of the associated noise and then have the audacity to not just complain but actively campaign to get circuits closed. Many UK circuits are now hobbled by ridiculous noise restrictions, knock on effect has reduced track hours and that makes some venues uneconomic and the inevitable forced closure.

Idiot needs a darn good spanking!

Arm Waver is there a link or web page with all the information on or is it a case of hunting the net for it?

You’ll have to let me know how it goes, plans are still bubbling away to bring back the ‘Barton In The Clay’ airfield (birth place of the Luton Minor) as a one off special fly in in the near future.

Coincidently just watched episodes 1 and 2 about an hour ago!..

Probably one of the most moving programmes I have watched in a long time, the best way I can describe the series is ‘who do you think you are’ for real people… 10/10.

Well presented, well filmed and not to intrusive yet still very personal. Nice to see Carolyn Grace and the Grace Spitfire at Bentwaters.
