Hi Eddie
The picture I have is from WWII Images.com and is on their records as LM720 QR-O but I know from combat reports at the Public records office that LM720 was QR-D. It is possible that on a poor quality picture that the “D” looks like an “O” or is it more likely that Derek Brammers book has the correct identity ? I would like to know one way or the other as I have been researching LM720 for some time and thought that I had got a picture of it but now after seeing the same picture in Derek’s book as R5856 i’m not so sure. The photo below is from WWII images.com.
I think the Turkey sheds on the runways at Langham in Norfolk are Bernard Mathews.

Hi Jim
I’ve also got her down for Bremershaven 18/19 Sept, Rheydt 19/20 Sept & Munster 23/24 Sept all with different crews. Her story then stops until the morning of the 15th Jan when she crashed into the CHEL mast at Salthouse in Norfolk. I think a return trip to the P.R.O. is called for.
Andy
Thanks for the replies
I should have noticed the changed serial number earlier so I could have looked for more entries LM920. I have not been able to find any other information on this serial No. so the most likely thing is that it is infact LM720 as this serial stops being used around the same time. As far as I can tell LM720 was only ever with 61 Squadron as I have a copy of A.M. form 78 which gives a delivery date of Sept 1st and the O.R.B gives the date 10th Sept for its first OP.

Thats the one. Dont know what it is about this picture but I really like it.
Andy
Thanks Ashley
I would really like to see that one again.
Andy
Thanks Hatton
Two more for the shopping list. Its not really something that I had ever thought of. I have seen programs on reporters with ground troops but never in bombers.
Andy
Morning all
IIRC the T2 at Sibson airfield came from RAF Peterborough (Westwood)
Andy
Thanks for the reply. Yes thats the closest thing I can see. I have another with a large Jubilee clip and part of a rubber connection but that one has been squashed flat so would not be a good photo

Hi Ross
I have the accident forms from Hendon and one form which lists the date of manufacture , batch no. and squadron. At the bottom of this form it states SOC on around 22nd Feb 1945 which is around a month after the crash. Would this be due to a delay in the paperwork or would the airframe have been taken away for storage prior to disposal ? The accident form states destroyed but there must have still been some large parts to be disposed of and I would be interested to know where they were disposed of.
Thanks
Andy
Hi Alan
Thanks for the reply. Where are the ORB’s stored ? Is it feasible to search for any Norfolk entries or is that too big a task (Never searched the ORB’s) or do I need to find out which unit covered this area at this time ? Is it possible that a team was sent out from a local airfield ??? Sorry so many questions but I would like to know where this aircraft ended its days.
Thanks
Andy.
Hi Steve
No idea how to post a link but the company is called Motor books. If you have any problems finding it a link can be found on the RAF Lincolnshire.info w
ebsite on the Skellingthorpe page.

Got the plans to the airfield through the post yesterday and we have a winner – Moggy c was right it is an air raid shelter. It is one of several dotted around the Peri track between the Pans. On the plan there would have been a Radar workshop behind it at right angles but that is long gone. With the houses creeping closer to it I have a feeling the air raid shelter will soon go the same way. It would be a shame to see one of the few remaining buildings being built over.
Andy
Thanks, I will E mail them. There is a plan of the airfield on the wall of the Skellingthorpe Heritige room but I went there and the museum at the Birchwood leisure centre first By the time I had finished wandering around the airfield it was too late to go back. Here’s a few more all from the bomb store side of the A46.
Andy.
Thanks for the reply
It is on the airfield side of the A46 closer to the runways than the bomb store but there is so little left its hard to know exactly where you are on the site 🙁
