    Hi
Anyone out there know know the meaning of a circular stamp with BES106 ?
It is on the base of a roller which came from a Lancaster. The other numbers on the base are 31565BES17 and 31568A. Are there any clues from these numbers what the part is for or where it may have been on the aircraft ?
    Thanks
    Andy

I almost went on the tour in the Queen Mary trailer but decided to go and look at the Wellington exibit again (When I came out it was raining again) then went around all the exibits in the main hanger. I had intended to go on to Wickenby for a look around but as happened on my previous visit I could not pull myself away. I dont know what it is about East Kirkby but it is still my favourite museum.

Never read his the first one in the trilogy “Wings over Georgia” though. I can never seem to read books in the correct order. I belive that JK also did the voice over for the Two farmers and a Lancaster Video & Operation Lancaster.

Read it twice now. Almost as good as LT and a very good read about his frustrated attempts to re form his crew and get back on “ops”. I will not spoil your enjoyment of this book but at one point in it JC is wandering through a wood shooting targets with the army.

Thanks very much. I’ve had it and a few other parts that I picked up from a Lancaster crash site a few years ago and often wondered what it was.

I have a video called “Some of our aircraft(Or airmen) are no longer missing about a Dutch army unit that has the job of clearing crashed aircraft from recently drained areas of the issellmere. I’ts probably the wrong spelling but it seems to have been made in the seventies or eighties by the cars and takes one veteran back to his crashed aircraft as they are excavated. If you are interested in getting a copy I will get all the details from the case when I get home from work.

    Hi Moggy
    Dimensions as follows
    Outside Dia. 22mm

    Inside Dia. 21mm

    Length 14mm

Slight inward taper at firing pin end

Outside of cartridge seems to have marks caused by being clamped inside a barrel when fired. It seems to be very well made out of brass (Much better quality than a shot gun cartridge)

Tried to photograph it but it came out blurred. I dont think my cheap and nasty digital camera is up to it.

    Thanks

Many thanks for the information. The reason I am asking is because I found what I initially thought was the base of a shotgun cartridge but longer and made of brass also without the lip normally found around the base. One of my colleagues at work, Who is a member of a shooting club, confirmed that it is not from a shot gun but when I mentioned that a Lancaster crashed nearby suggested a Coffman starter cartridge. There were also some anti aircraft guns on this site and a priming cap for one the shells has also been suggested so I think that will be my next line of inquiry.
Thank you again for your help.

Would they have been converted to a more up to date starting system ( I assume you are refering to the BBMF & East Kirkby) but would an operational Lanc from 1945 have a Coffman. I have tried Google but can only come up with a Coffman starter on Spitfire Merlins ?

    Hi
Thanks for the reply. Yes it is one of the four mast stumps on the site. The brick building you can see I belive is the IFF block and behind where the picture was taken is the stand by set house (I think this was where the generators were sited). A very picturesque part of Norfolk in the sunshine but not in the early hours of a january morning when this aircraft came to grief.
    Yokel.
