Good point. I think I would prefer to fly myself rather than be flown, at least you are in control of your destiny then
Yeh i think thats’ what i’ll end up doing, just because I need the hours.

At-6 – It doesn’t really matter as you say because it’s purely opinion . The Harvard will certainly ‘bite’ but sadly it’s ‘bite’ is often fatal .
oh i know that for sure, not many experienced aerobatic T6 pilot’s left, most have spun into the ground.
But I guess the advantage it makes you respect the it a lot more, I know I sure as hell will not do aturn with full flap and gear down, if you do that and add power, you can more or less say goodnight. It’s things you hear from other pilot’s that make you aware of things like that, and also the Harvard, if you get slow at the top of the loop, will torque itself out and fly away staright and level. Funny the number of things you pick up by listening. I got a million stories about Hardvards.
But i think we should agree to disagree on this one 🙂

Whilst the Harvard/T-6 is undoubtedly a good aircraft I feel that the Chipmunk is a better aircraft for training. It can certainly bite but you really need to be doing the wrong thing to make that happen.
My point exactly, you need an aircraft that will bite you, because if you don’t, you may not know how to handle a situation, or take a plane for granted, thinking it is safe and easy to fly, can’t do that with a T6.
If we are deciding a best trainer, it’s the overall picture you want, and learning to fly on a tigermouth is all very well, but it doens’t rain you for anything.
and this is my opinon, so I don’t bash me for it, or try and make me out to look stupid.

Don’t be so hard on the poor Stearman, wonderful aircraft, mind you it must take some strong tape to be able to fly one whilst wearing a wig 😀
tis true tis ture… don’t like open cockpit aircraft, would nver do aeros in one. And when i flew in one in the states, they aren’t something you wanna land on tarmac in a crosswind!

If you really divorce yourself from vested interests (AT6P2B 😉 ) which is the aircraft that if you put a line drawing on a flash card most people would unhesitatingly say “trainer”?I suspect it isn’t the T6. The frequency with which it turns up in films playing a fighter / Zero mitigates against it, surely?

No. I believe it to be the best trainer as it is the most like the fighters bombers etc. the syaing goes, got 300hrs on a P-51, then you are ready to fly a harvard. So it shows that the Harvard is a difficult plane to master and that training on it moulds the best pilots ofr fighting in combat. Flying a Tigermouth, does not prepare you for getting into a spitfire, huricane, mustang, thundeerbolt, P-40, they have nothing in common apart from a tailwheel.
But then that ‘s my view. A trainer shuold be something that prepare you for, as in the cases of WW1&2, arial combat, and a Harvard does that.

The trainer has to be the Chipmunk.
Chipmunk? You mean the skunkmunk right?

Oh I do very much so, 🙂 my hardest choice will be whether to lfy my self or be flown….

Lean by the mistakes of others as life is not long enough to make them all yourself.
good advice, heaven knows i know some pilots who ahve done stupid things, i’ll make sure i remember them!
