Blimey guys, Does it matter who’s to blame? It happened, all the discussion in the world will not bring it back so lets all move on to the next bit of speculation,
I bet half the folk complaining didn’t have tickets anyway & would have watched from fields around the base without contributing to the funding of the show in any shape or form. (you only have to see where some of the fine photo’s seen on this forum are taken from to know that!)
To the folk who did have tickets I feel sorry for you but, to be fair you should know what our Health & Safety police are like If you have lived in this country for anything more than 5 years.
If my memory serves me correctly the bigger rudder will allow operation of the aircraft in higher crosswind situations, which nowadays when these aircraft are operated from airstrips that are not always ‘nose into wind’ you need all the help you can get! a lot of wartime airfields had no set airstrip, you just put the nose into wind & took off!
Hope that helps………….
To be fair, all the work so far to get Miss Helen into the hangar has been done by the guys from the Fighter Collection! The aircraft will be surveyed & a plan of action will be drawn up, thanks to all for the best wishes, She will be back!
I would however again ask that any speculation is kept to yourselves as it helps no one in the long run & sometimes only makes folk look a little foolish.:o
Cheers

To ‘stuart gowans’ There was no prop blade or U/C change on the Saturday as the damage only happened on the Sunday!
To ‘the bump’ There was no fuel leak on Saturday, that was an overflow for when the electric pump is on but the fuel cut off is pulled back, the only place the fuel can then go is overboard through the drain. 😉
Just to let you know, Pete Johns was the pilot (who did a brilliant job after hitting the ‘ski jump’ just before the perri track which launched him into the air again!) yes, the engine stopped, there will be a full investigation into the incident & I would ask that any speculation is kept to yourselves,
I would however, like to thank the folk who took all the photo’s as they have been very useful to us in working out what immediate items we had to take to DX by helicopter this lunchtime to enable the aircraft to be moved into the hangar from the flightline.
I note that the photo’s posted here originated from the other forum & as such it might be nice to credit who took them if it wasn’t the poster on this site.
Cheers & thanks for your understanding.

Update – ‘Miss Helen’ has just flown past my window into Filton, to Robs’ maintenance base here, presumably for a pre-air show season spruce-up.

Robs’ & Rolls-Royce’s maintenance base 😉

Yep, the Mk8 Spitfire is also flying, It may pass your window going the other way!
Ooops, I know that feeling! 😉
The only mod BBMF has carried out is to replace all the double glazed perspex units ie windscreen, canopy and rear glazing with single skin units this was done many years ago probably because at that time nobody was prepared to manufacture the original units given that the a/c are no longer pressurised. The canopy however, originally was never fitted with leading edge metalwork. So the canopy is not highly modified it is just single skin rather than double skin all the dimensions are the same, they still use the original rails and locking mechanism.
The canopy on this type is very different from the normal fighter aircraftas originaly the cockpit was pressurised for high altitude PR flights, this canopy has NO framework & has a very different method of retaining the canopy to the airframe, there is, however, a metal runner mounted to the lower edge of the glazing which runs on a series of rollers & the canopy is held onto the airframe with a type of ‘clam shell’ clamping system which has a locking device just behind the pilot seat mounting frame.
Hope this helps:)
Miss Helen will be flying again in the next few weeks, nothing wrong, just had winter to get out of the way!
That looked a bit botched to me – unless that grass run was very short I have no idea why the aircraft was allowed to descend so close to the tarmac surface. I would have thought a slightly higher approach with time to cut the engine would have been better alround.
Yes, a really ‘botched landing’ where both pilot & pax got out OK, & the aircraft ended up with minimal damage! Pilot or no pilot, I’d like to see your effort in his position! Heaven help us if you start flying something bigger than your puddle jumpers, you just don’t have a clue!
& yes, I DO know what I’m talking about, we operate a Mustang.
The guy done good! why dis him? You said it all ‘I have no idea’!!
How much damage was done?
Just thinking further on that, here’s another possible scenario.
Because of the high price of fuel, the workshop sets the engines for absolute leanest burn allowable by the manufacturer, but after a longish period on descent at a low power setting, the engines fail to respond, an unanticipated consequence of the lean setting in these conditions on this particular day.
I seem to recall reading about this happening to a 747 in less pressing circumstances, but they had time to eventually get two engines going again and land safely.
If I was an investigator I’d be interested to know if this was the first attempt to spool these engines up subsequent to the aircraft’s descent into LHR.GeoffR
WHAT? Good heavens! someone’s been messing with the carb again!
If you have anything worthwhile to contribute from a technical viewpoint, please feel free. 😉

On any of these accidents I tend to wait for the AIB report unless I was there then I can make an educated guess & I will keep it to myself as I have learnt over the years that some folk just don’t want the truth if It doesn’t suit them!;)
It’s good to see that this forum still has it’s share of speculation ‘experts’
One thing that has been annoying me intensely in the reports on News 24 is the way they describe the marks where the aircraft initially contacted the ground as being “in a nearby field”.
Idiots!
Paul
P.S. Had to get that one off my chest. I feel much better now…
WHY?? Does it really matter? I should go for some ‘anger management’ if you get ‘intensely annoyed’ when folks get things wrong, However, you must be truly incandescent by some of the previous posts in this thread! 😀 😉
Mk732 OOoops!!
I wish them well with the repairs, I’ll be interested to see how the engine fairs this time as the prop is VERY much shortened in the pictures, more so than when it landed at Volkel AB (hope the spelling is near!) with the gear unlocked back in the late 90’s (I have on of those blades still in my hallway) I’m sure someone will be able to sort them out, again, I wish them luck!
