I know the book I am about to recommend involves civil aircraft of the 1980’s but I really do recommend:

Beyond the Blue Horizon by Alexander Frater.

After that I would go with any of the “After The Battle ” series.

I am just finnishing Jack Curie’s “Wings Over Georgia” I’ve really enjoyed it.

Would also really recommend anything by Don Charlwod or Martin Middlebrook.

Good thread this, am enjoying it

Had a fantastic tour. Really fantastic. I have a great photograph of Mrs Waco winding open one of the hangar doors………..

I cannot praise the tour guys at Scampton enough………….

As for the pub………forget it. Some wonderful artifacts but the people who ran it were very rude !

as I understand it…………Bomber Command were given a directive from the politicians to bomb either Leipzig, Chemnitz or Dresden.

I understand Dresden was chosen based on weather.

I have read that in many sources.

It was a political decision not a military one.

I often wonder if the people in power were giving our allies from the east a little reminder of what was available if they went too far.

Personally, I find the decisions of the politicians, who were responsible for bomber command, to dis-own them at the end of the war, reprehensable.

    Hang your head WSC………………..

They used to do monthly “specials”, which featured a “two for one” deal, including full board.

Me & Mrs Waco really enjoyed our stay and the grounds were lovely.
    I would certainly recommend it…

I would say the food was acceptable, no more, no less.

The “Major” was holding court while we were there. It was a pleaseure to say hello.

Go for it Moggy !!!! You know you can afford it !

……..I’m not a pilot but I have worked in flight ops for the last 25 years.

A well respected friend quoted me the other day that in Europe there are over 600 applicants per jet job at the moment and things are set to get worse.

Do not even think about it………
