OK……
You are going to think I need to be carted off to the local funny farm after this one…….and you might well be right.
However, times are very hard and I suspect will become very hard over the next few years. I for one fear for the future (in there current state) for the BBMF and the Arrows.
Soooooooo
Put everything at Scampton. The reds, BBMF (yes, yes active RAF people but would surely not need the same level of security.
Add most of the RAF museum content. Also make the airfield active for all air traffic, ie a fully operational airfied for civil and military purposes. Add the Vulcan, add private operators etc, etc, etc. Use many of the buildings for musem purposes.
With regular income on a daily basis from a museum, plus landing fees etc plus revenue from regular air days (ie in steam) and airshows might generate a resonable revenue stream.
Who knows, might even get a new hotel out of the old messes.
Such action would provide a fabulous tourist attraction and might help us retain the BBMF and the reds.
Regretably, we cannot keep everything, as much as I would like us to. The fact is the country is flat broke and its going to get worse.
If need be fund this from selling Hendon and Bently Priory (though keeping the underground bunker, with museum access).
Yes I know it sounds barking and everyone will rubbish the idea…..but a working airfield, fighters, bombers, and yes even Vulcans (though for my money we should have kept the Vulcan grounded and built a replica Manchester, Sterling and Heyford!)
………puts on tin hat and retires to the funny farm…………
I hold the Bomber Command aircrew of WWII in the highesst possible esteem. They are my heroes.
However, I was not there at the time so my opinions or points of view probably lacks some validity.
That said and in my very humle opinion WSC let them do all the dirty work before hanging them and their leader out to dry.
As a consiquence of this opinion, I have little time for WSC………
They shall not grow old.
Sorry PMN, fair comment. It’s also confession time, book has yet to be finnished.
Skyservice did have some good people but was not too keen on some of the French Canadian air crew, who I found to be rude on occasion and with a large bag of King Teddys on each shoulder.
They were quite good at taxing aircraft on to grass, not great with an A330.
Thanks all
……….really got to go for it now………let you know how I get on !
Cheers !
You will really have to wait for the book to come out for the really interesting bits. However I will never forget my Hajj attachment with them……..Wonderful chaps all………..not.
…..when I finnish my book, Skyservice will get a number of mentions……..not very complimentary either…………
Especially (to those like me) who are working all weekend.
Thanks Baz…….much appreciated.
