Thanks for the suggestion to read this book. I am about 1/3 of the way through it and enjoying it greatly. Lettice Curtis gives me the impression of being a talented individual who did not tolerate well those with lesser abilities.

The description of the cultural difference between the U.K. and the U.S. is illustrative too.
