During my second tour of Iraq redundant Phalanx CIWS were employed at the COB (Basrah Int Airport) along with all their radar and support equipment.
These fixed sites were put in place to provide counter battery fire against more frequently occuring insurgent mortar and rocket attack. The phalanx proved very successful in this role and I must admit watching two seperate 20mm cannon tear up the night sky was something to behold!
Phalanx, with 81mm mortar (range around 5-6km) and AS90 (25+km) in place to provide counter fire gave them somthing to think about!:diablo:
somthing huge and very smoky just lifted out of Waddington, too far away too see what it was but sounded different to the usual AWACS. any idea? Nimrod R1 I think.
is the brunty vulcan at waddington?
Just a quick update. move in completed! commence dog walking with camera in hand!
From a quick look around all seems intact on site. Gate guard still in place. awaiting installation of internet before some pics go up!

Yes! ‘929 is now G-BXCV and registered to Ardmore-a Hong Kong based company
I can feel a trip coming on!:diablo::dev2: Havnt been to duxford since I was a kid. I was 13 and never been on a plane before and the pilot even let me take the stick!
Am I right in saying the Chippers were started by cartridge? just remember lots of smoke thats all, and that my pilot was a recently retired hunter and jag pilot!
Would i be able to get close to the aircraft do you think? what does it do these days?
My WP 929 flight was 30 Sept 1995. A bright clear sky, it was perfect! Unfortunately I dont have any pics:(
Is 929 still flying?
why should they not have been proud??
try again!
Stopped by RAF Uxbridge on Friday on my way back home to Wales to check out my new place! Just to keep anyone who maybe interested up to date, Uxbridge is now no longer operational with all Dept’s re-located to Northolt, however, the stations married quarter patch is going to remain in place once the fence comes down. There is no set date for development to start as a number of the accomodation blocks still remain in use, mostly by Army personnel from the Bks in Hounslow. I shall endeavour to get as many pics as possible before work commences on site. Also, no news of the Spit gate guard, Plod on the gate wasnt much help!
The Lynx AH7 we used to get bussed around in had a GPMG door gun, but would seat 11 including the door gunner. 12 would be a real squeeze leaving the gunner sitting squashed up on the floor!
I believe both AH7s and 9s are still regulars on the orbat but are no longer TOW missile carriers.
Hi all,
thanks for posting your info guys its much appreciated. I shall be heading up there at the weekend to recce before my move in two weeks will keep you all updated.
thanks!
been flown in most british forces types over the years, chinook, puma, gazelle, merlin and sea king. but must say the lynx has always been my favourite! got some great memories from NI!
