No good Cof A has expired, would cost millions just to get back into the air and without Manufacturers support I should think spares would be a major problem….wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole!!!!

The record load for the An-124 stands at 171 tonnes……..
The record in the photo was for a SINGLE ITEM OF CARGO – not total uplift.
Ken
Don’t remember what the 171tonnes was, any details??? but Antonov Airlines (ADB) state as below
London โ September – UK: Confirmation has been received from the Fรฉdรฉration Aรฉronautique Internationale (FAI) for the Antonov 225 record breaking test flight, that took place during September 2001. Carrying a record load of 253.82 tonnes of cargo, the AN225 flew at an altitude of two kilometers (1.243 miles) over a closed circuit of 1000 km at a speed of 763.2 km/h (474.23mph). The certificate confirms 124 separate FAI world records were broken during the flight.
An application has been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records but this is not the first time that Antonov Airlines has broken a world record. Both Air Foyle and the Antonov Design Bureau jointly hold two `world records` in the Guinness Book, one in 1993 for the heaviest single load ever transported by air (135.2 tonnes), and the other in 1991 acknowledging the heaviest shipment ever moved by air on one flight (142 tonnes).
The latter was broken (June 9, 1994) when an Air Foyle/Antonov-operated AN124 – 100 freighter airlifted a total weight of 146 tonnes, comprising a 109 tonne locomotive plus 37 tonnes of metal bridging equipment between London – Ontario Canada and Dublin, Ireland.

It is short for ANTONOV.
Always thought AN was short for Antonov ie AN22 AN225
At least they do in our company!!(ADB) :diablo:
Looks like an engine gas cartridge starter like on the Chippy !!
AN22 did MAN-ACE-MAN with a sick engine then went up to PIK-AUH, now back in GML undergoing abit of maintenance ๐ .

The AN-124 is at its best, when it comes to heavy, oversize load. For ordinary load it is just to expensive, to operate economical. Nice aircraft, but a rare specialist.
ADB seem to do quite a lot of general cargo flights especially around the Xmas period, also they usually do the Beaujolais run to Japan along with every other heavy freighter company (moved 600tonnes last year over four flights and didn’t break one bottle or container!!).

Like the Cessna Tweet always wanted one for some strange reason!!

from a mechanic point of view which aircraft is more complex the An-124, C-5 or the Boeing 747 as far as you know?
Probably the C5/747 as they don’t carry thier own techies on board….from my workings with the Ruslans they seem to be pretty OK maintenance wise ๐

AN124 MTOW 392,000KGS IF SPECIAL AUTHORITY GAINED 405,000KGS
AN225 MTOW 630,000KGS
