I’m amazed how high up this combat is taking place; in the accounts I’ve read of this combat between the A-4Q Skyhawks and Sea Harriers I got the impression that it all took place at extremely low level, down in the valleys, and not as this video clip seems to show at a much higher level, over the hills.

Probably, I think the Type 22 frigates were the only RN ships fitted with video equipment as part of their missile system trackers?

HMS Andromeda – Leander class frigate was fitted with Sea Wolf – she must have had the same kit as the Type 22. I was told that Andromeda’s Sea Wolf system didn’t work at all but not absolutely sure how accurate that rumour was.

Very good. Must have taken a lot time and effort to produce that. A couple of things though. Where did you get the ranges for Sea Wolf and Seadart? In Cardiff we took out a Canberra with a single dart at 32nm. We also fired a salvo at a Boeing 707 that was turning away from us at 35nm and I saw on radar one of the darts merge and detonate at 38nm…both missed. The total number of Sea Darts fired seems low also.

It was great looking at the names of the task force ships again…some old friends.

The common discussion between the opposing sides, shared memories, shared photographs etc. are a sign that things have moved on.
Likewise when Spit/Hurri pilots meet Messerschmit pilots

I doubt if EVER our present serviceman will share such memories with the IED makers of Iraq/Afghan.

Why do you say that? It is unlikely that say, in twenty five years our guys will have the opportunity to be in touch with past enemies in Iraq/Afghanistan. This will be down to our massive divide in culture. But most folk have the ability to try and understand and reach out to those who hurt us.

Before joining the RN I served in the Merchant Navy and my first ship was the Shell tanker SS Asperella. We sailed from Curacao with a full load of lube oil and visited most of the countries in South America. I was sixteen at the time and remember the people of that region with warmth and affection. I never, never, thought I would be fighting Argentina. In my mind they were not my enemy…they were friends.

I have respect for my past enemy and am trying to understand why they did what they did in 1982. It is not easy but I am determined to bury the Falklands War to history. God, why is it so hard?

We went along with the suggestion that the entire population should be forceibly evacuated and resettled in NW Scotland and/or the Outer Isles. It would have been considerably cheaper! The Falklands could then have been used as the world’s Nuclear Waste Dump (there’s only S Georgia and the S Sandwich Is downwind). But – as one wag pointed out – “Do you want, in 20 yrs, for the world to be taken over by 4 metre high penguins?”.

Who went along with that suggestion?…bar chat? Seriously, I completed three deployments to the Islands and can tell you that it’s not my favourite destination. I have not seen the place since 1988 and unlike a lot of veterans of that conflict I, at this time, have no wish to return. My brothers who have returned have been overwhelmed by the warmth and gratitude displayed by the ‘Bennies’ (servicemen have a habit of taking the p*ss out of anyone and everyone).

I get the feeling you are saying ‘was it worth it?’ and that question enters my head every single day of my life since 1982. The Falklands conflict lurks and probes my thoughts constantly. But, was it worth it? I think it was…but it has taken me at least twenty years to come to that conclusion.

    Chill guys and keep chatting.

    Annoyed!

Did my mates go south and invade the Falklands?…I’m bloody furious at the post from Six Nifty .50s

I do respect his views…but balls to him.

Not everyone agrees. To start with the Falkland islanders did NOT have full British citizenship. Margaret Thatcher tried to avoid that embarrassing fact for as long as possible, and she was not seriously challenged or pressed by the news media until after the war.

Thatcher also put Ronald Reagan in a precarious position; some legal experts believe that he violated the Monroe Doctrine by lending U.S. assistance to the British invasion fleet.

This was an extraordinary time to be a reporter in the U.K. The normally strident and inquisitive British political watchdogs were nearly silenced by the explosion of wartime flag-waving and nationalism not seen since 1945. Thatcher did nothing to discourage this. The PM had been taking heat for various policies and the Falklands crisis provided a welcome distraction.

Of course Galtieri was also looking for a political diversion from internal troubles, but that is not the point.

Can’t except that Sir… British invasion fleet?

    Enrique,

I for one was not offended. It did go ‘quiet’ after that post but I think that was just coincidence…don’t worry.

As I have wrote before, the C130s were not the only supply airplanes which broke the british isolation around MLV.
The Argentine Navy had continued its supply flights to Pto Argentino using Electras.

The father of my best friend was Electra’s Flight Engeneer in those flights.
He has 9 landings in MLV, 2 of those at night.

We are very good friends, but he didn’t like to talk about it.

Anyway, I was chating with him today, and I asked about how they landed in the Pto Argentino landing stripe.
He told me that the flights were at very low altitude, the navigation was using its own INS.
They only climbed for a quick radar scan looking for goblins / “DUENDES”.

The radar at the islands were not capable of taking them until they were very close.
The landing stripe was marked at night using trash cans burning fuel.
So it is amazing the UK’s guys couldn’t see those operations.

After the war, my friend left the Navy and worked for a freighter company using also an Electra.

After a couple of year of South American flights, the company wet lease the airplane to an UK company.
My friend was flying there for almost one year, and he was talking with british people who were in the other side and they said that they took those flights as MEDEVAC that’s why they didn’t shot down the Electras.

The painting scheme of the Electras was airliners type.

    Cheers from Taipei.

    Ariel

Many thanks for that information. One point though; after a period of time the British ships (mainly Type 42) would wait in the dark of night to ambush the inbound/outbound flights from PS airport. These flights were virtually impossible to detect let alone identify.

My ship, HMS Cardiff, went on many such missions and we would attempt to shoot down ANY aircraft that we saw trying land or take off from PS airport.

Gabotof , I was talking to Marcelo / Tanoarg , there are 3 videos shot from the camera aboard daggers while executing atacks on ships –

Marcelo sugested me to ask you Griffiths ( Ken ) if you think its appropiate to show them to you , because of respect to those that may have lost theire lifes on this atacks –

They last 30 seconds each , as I said camera shot from Daggers during atack –

Ken , and actualy who ever is following this forum , I will be waiting on your thoughts before posting anything –

    Thank you Enrique

That would be something new to me. I have seen ‘still’ pictures taken from aircraft attacking British ships but do not recall seeing video…I would like to see them.

Nothing we can say here will change what caused this conflict in 1982!

This is a great thread that has contributions from those of both sides that actually fought in this conflict and it is a great opportunity for each side to learn something about the experiences of the other side, to take on new information and possibly to dispel a few of the myths that endure to this day.

So please, let us not allow this thread to descend into an argument about the rights and wrongs of this conflict…..but restrict it to the military action that took place.

I agree. Surely, we have to move on…and on the way find out more facts about both sides of the war.

There was no Sea Harrier (or Harrier) pilot named ‘Harry Trent’ that flew during the conflict.

‘Harry Trent’…you couldn,t make it up. What about Sea Harrier pilot Lieutenant ‘Tommy Toecutter’. Sorry guys, made me laugh:D:D:D
