Received my Vol.22 last Saturday and although I haven’t got the time to browse it in detail, the pictures and articles are just amazing…, especially those on the Tucano and Ecuadorian Air Force, but the J-10 report seems a genuine jewel on itself. I will read it and comment later.

Impressive book. IMHO, one of the most striking of the whole collection at least in visual terms.

    Congrats Airtime!

Poland acquired F-16s in a deal that was cynically politicised by both sides, and was gifted aircraft that it essentially didn’t have to pay for. In return, promises of offset have turned out to be a joke – just like they have in Chile and everywhere else.

I think you are a bit disinformed. In the case of Chilean F-16s purchase the offset programme is not a joke, but a reality, at least in the military field:

In May 2003, LMA and General Electric inaugurated an International Specialised Technological Centre. Its objective: to create special communications for the aerospace industry, like techical manuals and service charts for the aviation engines maintenance.

Besides, in 2004 LMA certificated ENAER (Empresa Nacional de Aeronáutica) as a Lockheed C-130 official maintenance centre to service Herkys from Latinamerica and Africa air forces.

On the other hand, LMA and ENAER also subscribed an agreement to promote the entrance of ENAER to the highly competitive US aerospace industry. This agreement gives ENAER the commercial and technical backup to obtain aviation deals for as high as US$50 million in the American civil aviation market.
This among several other military-related projects which are developing as we speak.

What is been truly a joke are the civilian projects that were supposedly part of the offset program, but that’s a whole completely different history, because that is a State responsability, and that’s failure of the socialist government here in Chile, unable to do the things properly and in time.

    Cheers

You are right Deino. My credit card was charged on August 30th, so Vol.22 is definitely hitting the shelves as we speak. I just want to grab my new book ASAP…

I’ll let you know when it shows up.

    Shadow…are you a subscriber?
My credit card was charged on April 23 for Volume 21, but still no signs of my book…almost one and a half months after the payment. I hate Airtime shipping method. It sucks…

Have any of you guys some more photos of Chilean Navy Bell 412? Is this an old photo or 412 are the only ones which are not painted in darker blue gray colours as other planes and helis of Armada?

I have some. Hope you like them!:)

Your picture was taken circa 2003-2004. Naval 53 -the sole 412 operated by the Chilean Naval Avition- was sold last year.

Alrite, Condor, i take back my last post. And in no way do i disput the fact that more F-16s r coming to Chile. But at 60 mil a piece, dunt you find it rather expensive? I mean the standard quote for Gripen is 30 mil.

    Hey Von Herrs… you’re prejudicing again…

Each Puma is 47 million, not 60.

And please tell me which country bought its Gripen at 30 million….

That price includes the wings, radar and engine?? 😀

    I am not interested in Peruvian-Bolivian-Chilean geopolitics…

That’s clearly evident my friend…more than obvious…because you’ve made some nonsense comparations in your previous posts…

I ll just list one exaple, Spares and maintanance. Spares: without 40+ number of planes, its hard to keep the spares flowing at a operationally acceptable rate.

    Have patience man…I repeat…only 10 F-16s are brand new….:D

Maintanance: Chile is a pretty developed country, but the apparent lack of engineering-focused and technologically-focused industries does not contribute to the capabilities of maintance of such complexmachines.

    Sure…

Mirage Pantera or F-5E Tigre III Plus programs are worthless…
…like the support that Enaer will receive from LM… 😎

Having 10-20 Falcons in reality is not much better than having 10-20 Mirage 2000s or Gripens, because the capabilities of the aircraft is eroded already by not-very-sharp maintanance and training.

Not very sharp?? Who’s “not very sharp” maintaining their warplanes?? We don’t train our pilots or ground crews?? Any evidence to back up that opinion??

And plus, it would be impossible to create tactics and combat strategies with only 10 specimens, thus failing to bring out the best in the aircraft.

Perhaps… but Chile is not buying 10 specimens. Ten specimens are brand new…but soon we will have to replace the ageing delta fleet, with more than 20 years of service and very expensive maintaining…
Have you ever read about MLU F-16s, for example???

wait a little longer 😀 Have patience man!!

If I was in charge of the air force, i would much rather have gotten 18-30 Gripens without the overly-expensive and unnessecery electronics.

Unnecessary for you pal, but not for FACh… and not overly expensive.
How much do you think we would have paid for 30 Gripens??? C’mon…be serious…
The motto here is: “not huge quantities…but always the better”

Thank God you’re not in charge of the Chilean Air Force…!!!

I personally find this decision rather disturbing, becuase this is a sign of South America’s mover away from rationalisation to machoistic warlordly mis-judgements, Africa-style.

    Ok, let’s see…
First you’re complaining because 10 aircraft are not enough, and now you’re feeling disturbed because Chile bought just 10 new aircraft… I simply don’t understand your way of thinking…
Your biased opinions are loaded of prejudice mate. What has to do Africa with Chile!!!?? Can you explain please??

Also, it would be rather obvious that Chile doesn’t need those kind of planes anyways. Argentina? No chance of armed conflict. Bolivia? Peru? Probably would stay on the ground. Peru’s Mig-29s are already non-functional, and Bolivia? Surely nothing more advanced then what Chile currently has.

    And that’s the point.
Chilean Armed Forces have always based their acquisition of new/used material in a disuasive Defense Policy. We’re not buying new planes to attack our neighbors, we’re renewing aircraft with more than 25/30 years of use. Is this disturbing??…. it’s quite logical I’d say…

    Anyway von herrs…what you’re saying is nonsense…
You prefer the purchasing of 30 Gripens than 10 F-16 because that is “rational” and maitain the balance in the region…

    …as if the F-16 were the Death Star…. 😀

We’re talking ’bout a few very modern aircraft for a small, but highly professional air force which has to do its job. Period.

My friend Condor, there is a lot of rumours in the government for the purchase of the Rafale. We are very used to the Mirage family, some FAB pilots have tested and also flew M2000s so it is not a big deal move on to the Rafale. According to press, the deal will be made in 2007 for deliveries in 2010. Until the deliveries we have two options……..use a squadron of uograded F-5s or make a lease of a used fighter to fullfil the gap. I go with the second one. We can make, like Italy did, a lease of some F-16ADF Vipers, from ANG inventory, for five to seven years until the first delivery of the Rafale.
    What do you think?

    Saludos, A-29

    Sounds great A-29.

Anyway, priority Nº1 should be to train for the new type, and upgraded F-5s (type you know sooooo well) or F-16 seems pretty appropriate for the task…

I insist…. Rafales in Brazilian markings sounds terrific!

    Good luck!!

personally, i find Gripen, or even the Mirage 2000 a much better choice for Chile, if they need those kinda stuff in there anyways.

    Why von_herrs?
