This re-configuaration applied today IS some way better, but there is still way too much wasted space, and a too small area to write it.
I think you suppose that most users are using phones, but actually, being a more ‘ mature’ user profile, I suspect many are using laptops and large screens which accomodate a bigger body of text. Your developers have not understood the function of the forum, and the sort of people who use it.
Scrunching contibutions into a small area, to both write in and view, discourages more lenghty, informative posts, which have been the raison-de-etre of this board, and the key to its popularity. If people no longer chose to post substantial, informative and engaging contribtions, then this forum has no future.
Any chance of dialling down the yellow banner, it looks garish and unsophisticated ?
Finally, for now, can we go to last post in a thread without scrolling first to the bottom, then selecting final post.
Thanks for making a start on salvaging this ‘situation’.
It is masterclass in how to kill a successful and much used forum. The modern military board has tumbleweed blowing through it. Historic is not much better.
The two questions which remain unanswered.-
1 Why on earth would you decide to do THAT?
2 Why would you not recognise the outrage and get on and try to salvage the disaster ?
Key Publishing.
You really should not misunderstand how much of an error this format it. You have made it nearly dysfunctional, certainly compared to how it was.
It is not a message board, it is ( or was ) a serious forum, with vast content, a really valuable and unmatched resource of information and images. Now none of the images now appear except as a link.
You provide a very small box for text ( is it meant to be phone-friendly ? ) and it is simply not fit-for-purpose for any extensive lengthy contribtions.
I think you have failed to research or understand the profile of the users of this forum, or the function which it has, until now, provided. What , I wonder is the age of the people who thought this to be an improvement.
The fonts selected are ghastly, and more suited to a cut price double-glazing poster,
To claw back some functionality I would urge you to –
1 Provide a large area for submissions, so that viewers can read a substantial body of text rather that endlessly scrolling
2 Allow photos to be shown
3 Make font a little smaller and make the whole thing less garish, ie softer colours, no dreadful bold blocky text. Make it easier on the eye. Ditch the yellow
4 Look at other forums , and see how it is done.
5 Allow us to register with old names /details. Most can’t as you know.
There is such disappointment about what you have elected to do, because you have disrupted, maybe terminally, a long-running community from which many real-world friendships have grown. You have turned a library into something more like a gaming arcade, and I fear the old faces will slip away, and not come back.
Please take time to look at the feedback here, and then act upon it.
