You are correct. Once you get above around 700 units you don’t end up saving anymore. So yes, an order for 2000 would mean each aircraft costs the same as it would if you had ordered 3000. Anyone trying to tell you otherwise is clueless.

Actually from a academic point of view you are wrong.
Its all about how hard you industrialize your product. To Industrialize you product more, costs more, and therefore, you optimze your product to a certain amount of units.
A mobile phone is probably in the front line of all industrialized products.
Dont you think Mac´s Iphone benefited from the total sale of 73,5milion units? (to the end of 2010) or do you really think the unit price would be the same if the optimized the industrialization for 3000 units and only sold 3000 units?

So if lockmart scaled for producing 2 million planes they would probably would be designed it differently (cost more in development) and built a more automatic assembly line, much like a cars assemblyline. and the unit price? like a expensive car? (due to still expensive raw materials)

But of couse, theres no buisnesscase in that. 2 million planes will never be sold…

As you all know. Swiss Gripen evaluation isn´t really up do date,
The evaluation if even real, is leaked to harm swiss choise, due to the nature of the cherry picking. This is obvious, so stop rely on any data from it, it does not give the total picture.
Also, due to the swiss version isnt specified, there isnt much to evaluate is it? In a extreme terms it could be a Twinengine stealth monster due to this factor.
    So STOP THE BULL!

I think they specify according to what they want from the fighter and Saab and RUAG have to be able to deliver. So it will probably focus the development on those downsides finded.

    In practical term this means:
Switzerland didnt choose any of the fighter “off the shelf” that was on the offer. They choose to define there own light fighter together with Sweden, Saab, and swiss domestic industry. because this was what fitted the reqiurements, offsets and budget best!

So i really say stop this lobbying nonsense, and focus on the fun stuff, like how would Swiss gripen be like? and Whats going on between Dassault and BAE?

That whole Swiss Gripen thing is not yet done. For quite some people the Gripen would be only “interim” till abt 2030, when both Hornet and Gripen will have to be replaced. And by then the Gripen isn’t in production any more, so a Gripen-only fleet is a no-go (and the chance for a Hornet-only fleet was missed years ago). In addition some only now start to realize how much U.S. content the Gripen really has, which almost makes the Swiss air force single sourced from the U.S., a situation they always tried to avoid. Now that the French came forward with a new offer, the whole thing might start anew. And Eurofighter might be the laughing third, if the Swiss parliament should decide to go all-European, dump the Hornets, skip the Gripen, and go for three squadrons Eurofighter for both a/a and a/g use (which some say would be the most promising solution when planning towards 2040/50). The whole thing is not over yet …

Yes like the Austrians! Hangarqueens for every buck!
First of all Gripen NG isnt sourced so much as you imply from US, 20% thats it…
80% is the rest of the world.
Why is that a problem anyway?
Say any fighter that has all european electonics and components?

Do you really think F-22 doesnt have any component from china? Or that rafale is all french.

To make a desent fighter these days you need to get the best for youre application on the international market mostly without restrictions, otherwise you spiral in cost and dont meet your requirements.

AFAIK, the Rafale was design from the beginning to have an AESA radar. But the french didn’t have the technology ready for fighter aircraft and it would be too expansive and problematic. So they chose to develop PESA first and then AESA. As such the upgrade will be minimal the software been the same has already been debugged, as well as the tactics etc. The AESA on the Rafale will mostly increase the range and add a few new modes, but the actual radar already has quite a few.

If the French had though otherwise they would have put the RDY-3 instead.

For the Typhoon however they developed a very expansive MSA, and it’s only quite recently that they have decided to go ASEA, mostly because it has become an necessity for export. But the domestic need is very low (except the uk).

That’s the reason why the Rafale is going to have AESA before the Typhoon and why the Typhoon (if only the UK is pushing) isn’t going to see one for a moment (unless exported in enough number to a country ready to pay).

    did i say anything wrong?
i am still doubtful about the Rafale better radar range..

Maybe you confuse MSA with PESA? I believe that current gen. AESA have similar performance as current gen. MSA radars (better in some aspects, worse in others). Shifting the PESA to an AESA in Rafale will probably give a bigger improvement. This is probably one of the reasons that it will be introduced on Rafale before EF.

I dont think rafale would gain wanted range (meteor), and will get a lesser volume. But it will probably get much better tracking features and beamstearing related functions like mixed modes.
Yes, i mean MSA but still passive.
The reason for Rafale is probably a dedication of one goverment to the platform, and the need for future upgrades.

    Fighter AESA in europe..

First, the technology have been in europe for a long time. As many already mentioned.
Second, the motivation taken the investment havent been in europe because:
4 gen fighters have very good PESA radars with long lifes to spare.
Performance of AESA havent been better in all aspects, especially over latest gen. Euro PESA of the 4 gen fighters, in many cases performance is much worse. for example volume search.

The funny thing that plays here is marketing of those that have new radars. 😉

maybe, but the Su-30 has a higher RCS than my house… the rafale, on the other hand…

in any case, if such war takes place, the PAF is in for some hard times, much more than the IAF

thats a small house you got 😀

Oh they will nicely compliment the five 052C class AAW destroyers that is being purchased for the Swiss navy…

Swiss navy is really strong these days, the strategic subs lurking for months in boden-see is really the edge. noone can really pinpoint them!

to the best of my knowledge, the Swiss only use their F-22’s for air shows
