why is there so important to debate F-22 and F-35 on a Gripen/SU Thread?
This is kind of a weird debate, technicaly its not a big problem as it seems. not to much to change.
The only thing needed is a customer. Thats it!
The only way i see this happen is if gripen wins MMRCA or F-X2.
Whats next? this i wont speculate…
Interesting. Very interesting.
With the UK budget in the brown stuff, what price Gripens on the new carriers instead of $150million+ JSFs?
There is a hole thread on that subject…

Wait, haven’t you just spent 2 pages or something trying to argue that in no way the Russian L-band AESA arrays would be able to track a fighter? And now you’re suggesting that some simple, limited purpose antennas can do just that for the F-35? Interesting..
The purpose is to detect not track, together with IRST, it would be a deadly for any type of plane, stealth or not..
Whatever the claim about that were. From RR Goblin to GE F404 the Swedes did not spent billions to develop that, but used the money to produce the related hardware and adapting it for the national specifications. Similar thing with missiles and other main items. In most cases they did buy the knowhow and the tools in need to cover the basic needs.
about 60% of the RM12 is volvo aero interlectual property. Even parts of the standard F414 is.

If Sweden was one to make decision, they would certainly sell Jas-39, but they are not calling the shots. Well when you read the facts, democratic pro western government, future EU member, part of numerous NATO programs, Tiger meet this year, Serbia at least on paper validates as buyer of western equipment. I follow news from international military exercises and shows, I don’t remember seeing RuAF in Serbia of RuAF collaborating with Serbian AF, on contrary different NATO AirForces including USAF made friendly visits to Serbia’s ABs. But politics of that region and US politics goes much deeper…
Serbia is indeed a democratic republic with EU ambitions, but region is not still totaly free from conflicts. An thats whats bothering a swedish sell of weapons. Erieye would not be a problem, but a weaponplatform is.
I dont say sweden call the shots but the have in a possible sell.
I tried to tell you guys. A330 was simply NOT politicaly acceptable.
Why not call it by another name? NG Lightning 3? :dev2: that will give the right punch to it..
it’s another story… and it’s obviously peanuts compared to what the US taxpayer would have spared/gained through a real competition… in such a big deal as the KC-X market
anyway, each year, airbus takes a little more market shares from boeing… the USA could have had a bigger part of that through A330 assembly line on US soil, instead of what, they’ll just keep a line that was supposed to close for lack of orders with lesser production of an older airframe
Soon Asia and russia will take market share from them both. 🙁
i dont think gripen will be sold to serbia due to the conflicts in recent years. i think russian hardware is normally used here.
Croatia will probably get them first in a exchange deal with icebreakers!? (on the table) So, no Gripen for Serbia.
And already a controversy over the Gripen D being sent to India instead of the Gripen NG demo aircraft..Although I think that this is may not be grounds for dis-qualification as the MiG Corp only sent the MiG-29M2 converted into MiG-35 and not the final MiG-35 prototype.
To bad, but hopefully still in the game.. but with a glitch
if the avionics is under evaluation this will be a problem, if only flight envelope, not that big difference. Engine and avionics hopefully can be evaluated on site.
I think the Gripen is a better platofrm in a net-centric environemnt with its passsive detection capabilities and excellent datalink.
But one on one it is never going to beat an Su 35.
you really cant be shore of that. In a sustained dogfight ofcourse SU have a big energi advantage. But in any other way thats not the case.
The other cases is more complex and is how you manage to outplay the other weaknesses. And make use of youre own strongpoints.
In BVR it can go ither way, but in this case SU weaknesses is exploited.
Dont forget that is is made with data known of the SU (they are ofcouse not all known).
######## Clean up#######
Please, just a joke. couldnt bare my self when people talking about tejas as an elephant. I love the little thing. I have a thing for small fighters in general.
Gripen, f-5, tejas, EAP…etc.
So, Klarg, you see this as a good thing, it seems?
The first article almost sounded derogatory and nasty. What do you expect for SAAB?
🙂
stronger ownership in investor is a good thing.
Bae is some way a competitor and a weak owner..
Main guidelines according my view:
– Modernize around half of the current fleet of Su-27 to the SM and SM2 standard with a 4:1 mix.
– Modernize half of the current fleet of MiG-29 to the SMT standard.
– Store the rest of Fulcrum and Flankers to spare and/or to trade with Russia.
– Modernize all Su-25 up to the most modern Russian standard.
– Phase-out all Su-24.
– Retire old freighters and modernize the newest ones.Unfortunately there is no much material to exchange with Russia for the benefit of Ukrainian Air Force.
Do you really want to keep and refurbish those old workhorses? exept SU-27 all other are not cheap or worthwhile to upgrade. And russia is probably not the most popular neighbour these days ither. I think the bulgarian way, multirole single engine, Gripens or F-16 will fit the bill and preformance best, maybe upgrade those SU-27 also.
