I was at a race meeting at Blyton, and I’m sure we had a MkXIX fly over after it’s visit to Scunthorpe.
Anyone know which one it was?
What was funny,is that I was driving a recovery tractor, and because it was so hot,I was nodding to sleep in the cab,and the Spitfire’s engine noise woke me up!!!!!! 😀
Must have been at about 500 feet.

Hi
Thanks very much for the times, it was nice to see them.Hanglands, you may be interested to know that the Spitfire and Hurricane are at Bourne next Sunday, closing the classic car show, i’ve been told that will be roughly around 4.00.
Thanks
Yes, Little Bytham at 15:45 and Bourne at 15:50, subject to the usual provisos.
Based on a scheduled display time at Biggin Hill of 15 minutes starting at 14:00 (subject to weather and many other variables) the Lancaster should be at Bletchley for 14:40.
The Spitfire and Hurricane should be at Market Deeping for 15:15 and at Bourne 10 minutes later, but they do have 2 other displays after leaving Biggin Hill.
Honey I shrunk the Vulcan.
Where are those Marshal people when you want them?
I agree with the general consensus about the state of channel aircraft. Its very unlikely, that there is anything mechanical worth recovering.
However, the main thing still left in the channel, are the airmen who went down with some of the aircraft. No matter the state of their aircraft after so many years in sea water, those men deserves to be recovered, or at the very least found.
I think you will find even less left of the crew than of the aircraft.
Having dived many wrecks in where lives were lost I never once came across any human remains.
Even after a few weeks in the water there will be very little flesh left and the abrasive action of the sand and water will wear away the bones. Only chance is if the body is buried in silt fairly quickly.
The poster has proved very successful with 4 new members joining the team since Paul put it out in the surrounding villages.
It is a keen, small, friendly informal group and as Greg mentioned he is always more than willing to stop work to chat and make a brew.:D
Ted – here’s a couple of links to “Lincair” (sorry !!- no pun intended!!)
http://www.binbrook.demon.co.uk/html/collection.html
http://www.museum-explorer.org.uk/show.php?page=museum_content&c=25&q=&m=34&y=88The first website seems to have last been updated in Jan. ’07 so I don’t know the current status of the collection I’m afraid. If it is being sold and the collection dispersed it will be a great shame.
Your first aerial shot would appear to be some time ago as the Google satellite shot shows a much more mature museum display area at the Grainthorpe site, with these aircraft clearly visible. I still can’t date this aerial shot either so things may have changed.
Have a look :

Thanks Richard, I had found the Binbrook one but as you say it hasn’t been up dated for a while.
I couldn’t make out which of Google or VE had the most recent photo. I will ask my neighbour where the aircraft were located. I suspect he wouldn’t have seen them if they were in the VE location as that shows them some way from the road. Thinking about it the VE view of Metheringham Airfield Visitors Centre doesn’t even show our JP, still shows the squash court that used to be there.
Regarding the F.104 Starfighter (22+57) – it does appear to have been moved to Brunty, and before late April 2008, as she is shown (without wings attached) in a photo on the ‘Lightning Preservation Group (LPG) Bruntingthorpe – Message and Forum Board’
http://lpgxs904xr728.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=opendays07&action=display&thread=106
where ’22+57′ can be seen being towed round to the aircraft pans, ready for refitting the wings (26th April ’08).
There was mention of the F104 on a recent post about the open day at Brunty last w/e.
By the way – is this you Ted ?
http://xs186.photos.gb.net/search.php?txt=TED&action=Go&t=pIf it is you Ted, I heard your name mentioned when I popped in for a visit to Metheringham Airfield Visitors Centre a few weeks ago and was impressed with the progress made with the restoration of the Jet Provost (XS186).
Cheers
Richard
Yes that is me in winter garb, about six layers of clothing. You will find us down there most Saturdays come frost, rain, hail, snow and occasionally shine.
Our site needs updating but I don’t seem to find the time to take any photos, most of the latest work has been internal, wiring etc so there is not a lot to see.
I take it this is the NATO aircraft museum at Grainthorpe near Louth?.
The Lightnings being XR770 and XS416.
It would appear so Dennis although the website refers to it as “Lincair”, Lincolnshire Aircraft Preservation Trust.
A neighbour spotted the aircraft whilst driving by and mentioned it to me this morning.
Is that the F104 that has now gone to Brunty…? There was talk that the Lightnings may be leaving as well….
My neighbour did mention the place was up for sale.
PS did you get any of the Buchon flying in this afternoon. I got a couple on the ground.
Anybody know what its doing there ? The BBMF guide did not.
You mean this one?
Come up to sus out the opposition.:diablo:
Spitfire, possibly Griffin variant, with Hurricane about 100m behind flew north along the eastern side of Braintree, then swung round over High Garrett in the general direction of DX. This was about 13:30.
About 20 mins later the Spitfire, too much of a coincidence to not be the same one, flew back on it’s own in the reverse direction, only it was much closer and probably overflew the town centre. I didn’t get the chance to get it’s ID, I was cutting the lawns at the time and my missus alerted me to it before I could grab the bins.
What could this have been all about then.
Could it possibly have had a little play over Wethersfield before returning south.
BBMF’s MkXIX PS915 and Hurricane LF363 returning from the Weeze airshow on Thursday. Both back at CGY just after 14:00 so must have been a different Spit the second time.
Similarly, the Lanc is booked to appear at Nottingham, Notts Yacht Club and Matlock on May 10th. All three of these places are fairly local to me and it would be nice to catch her. Can anyone provide more exact locations and timings?
Notts Yacht club 14:10
Matlock 14:25
Subject to weather etc.
Hi
Does anybody have any information as to where PA474 will be displaying this Sunday in the Peterborough area? The BBMF site just lists it as a display but with no details – could this be Truckfest? There is no mention on their website though.Any further information would be much appreciated as it would be nice to see the lanc if it’s in my area on Sunday.
Thanks,
Scheduled for Peterborough at 15:00 (5 min Display) after leaving Uffington 14:55. Then on to Onehouse(Stowmarket) for 15:25 flypast.
I was looking, always have an eye on the sky, and listening…. I can usually hear such things miles away.;) ..cept when driving a mower. ..
That suddenly reminds me of my days driving a noisey mower in Horncastle back when Vulcans were tankers out of C’by…could hear them climbing out over noisey mower and through my ear defenders;)
..and further…have never seen any info or photos of a sight we had over Gunby last year..week up to RIAT I seem to recall.?..Lancaster motoring along…being trailed by Spitfire and Bae Typhoon… The Typhoon and Spitfire breaking left/right…reforming and repeat…:)
any thoughts on this..???And I must add I do also enjoy the T67 Fireflys that turn over the gardens regularly… 🙂
Clive:)
I thought I was seeing things when I saw those two following the Lancaster around. They were actually doing air to air photography from the rear turret. If you look at the cover of the 2008 RAF year book you will see one of the shots they took. The Spitfire & Typhoon are just breaking away either side of the Lancaster.
As I type the Dakota is circling over Woodhall Spa, it was about quite early this morning and very low the first time I saw it. The Lancaster was also circling to the North of the village earlier. Frantic work up for the start of the season.
Today..Dakota spotted at 2-47 pm over my works at Gunby, E.Lincs..and in the general area and out to the coast for some while…perhaps on air test.??
Clive.
You weren’t looking hard enough, the Lancaster was out a couple of times today.
