Well done Ted, that’s just what I was going to suggest. Print off my photo and paint yours to match it. Here’s a another idea – there is a JPT5 (XW353)on the gate at Cranwell. The blue band is the same size, so why don’t you go and measure it?
What and get myself arrested?:diablo:
Plastic Spitfires
There was one order placed with aerolite in Feb 41 for one prototype fuselage and a further order placed after the completion of the first one in April 41. The second fuselage was only partially finished.
Apparently they both ended up at Farnborough for weathering trials.
There is a complete chapter about it in “Spitfire the History” by Morgan & Shacklady.
Hi Guys
What we now need to know is,
1) What are the widths of the bands both dark and light blue, on the RAF Cranwell tail band.
Once again, any help is appriciated.
Scaling it from the photo posted, I make the total width of the band 457.2mm = 18″ and the width of the dark blue bands 38.1mm = 1.5″ making the light blue band 15″ wide.
This is assuming the static pitot outlet plate is the same size as our T4, 6″ wide with the hole in the middle.
Typhoon + oldest Spitfire doing a ‘Heritage’ type flypast and Typhoon doing a solo display and all BBMF aircraft, including Chipmunks, will be there.
Saw the practice for the Typhoon + Spitfire on Friday, really is an awsome display, something you probably won’t see that often.
High up in the blue just West of Spilsby, E. Lincs a BBMF Griffon Spitfire has just been giving it some verve.:) ..PM631.??
Clive.
Yup, Al Pinner giving it an air test.
Interesting, looks like a carbon copy of the Reds display routine?
Hardly surprising as they had an ex Red Arrows pilot as their Team Manager.
Over Metheringham Airfield Visitors Centre, Lincolnshire
Seen this afternoon:
12:22, DH82A Tiger Moth, G-ARAZ heading South after circling overhead
15:02, Jodel DR1050 G-AVOA heading back to Anwick
15:12, SE5A Replica heading North after circling overhead returned later heading South.
Delightful afternoon.:)
I hope there is a big party when the aircraft come out in her new scheme well done to all keep up the good work there are not to many engineering companies the could take this on as you need the experts for tis type.
Have a look at the BBMF website http://www.bbmf.co.uk/news.html
There is a big day planned in May at Duxford for the 50th anniversary.
Spitfire seen circling over Metheringham yesterday about 11:30 ish. A bit too far off to identify but could just make out invasion stripes on wings.
Which example is likely to be used for filming?
Well it won’t be PA474 as she is back to bare metal now and minus engines.
Front and rear turrets were fitted in 1966, she join BBMF in 1973 and the unit’s name was changed to the “Battle of Britain Memorial Flight”.
The mid upper turret was brought back from Argentina aboard HMS Hampshire and fitted in 1975.
Then in 1976 the flight moved to Coningsby.
Looks like the BBMF has had a good weekend, and everyone is happy.
Ken.
Except some of the locals down Dogdyke Road. There was quite a little gathering on the footpath when I drove down the road at 14:45, obviously discussing all the parked cars infront of their houses. One guy had put a trailer in the road to keep a clear space.
I think the LLA or RAF needs to think seriously about policeing the area during LLA day if there is not to be problems in the future. There was some extremely poor parking in places.
The RR Spitfire MkXIX, PS853 is supposed to be taking part for some air to air photogaphy of the 4 original HAF aircraft; to be shot from a YAK 52.
The new potential owner is one of my XS186 crewmen, and with his permission i’ll give out some detail later, and maybe a pic if he’s o.k. to release one before the final payment is made and the cockpit is actually handed over.
Here are a couple of shots that Relightflynn9 asked me to upload on behalf of the owner.
Not many bombers left to poach these days but I do spend some of my time in the company of the best bomber ever built.
According to my information the Tiger Force was to have a Black & White colour scheme.
I have a photo of PA475 taken in 1950 when she was with 82 sqdn at Eastleigh, Kenya and the caption refers to the ex-Bomber Command white & black colour scheme.
I don’t know about squadrons for the TF but Armstrong Whitworth built a batch of 25 MkI FE (TW647-TW671) which were delivered June – July 1945.
There were also some MKVII FE variants built by Austin Motors Ltd.
There were also 2 prototypes fitted with 1200 gal saddle tanks in order to extend the range that would be required by the TF.
