Fantastic thank you for posting
 I have travelled far and wide but have yet to meet a professional (ie one who takes pictures for a living – NOT semi professionals or those amateurs who happen to get paid for stealing group shots on a compact digicam over my shoulder) photographer using anything but Nikon or Canon digital cameras. Came across one still using a Leica, and a few with film cameras of various makes, but never anything but the big two for DSLRs. – Nermal
Nermal Not true You should read the reviews, especially the Professional photographers who have used this camera for a year or more. I am also sure that other makes are represented as well. Rid yourself of your confusion. Yes Canon and Nikon do dominate but there are other reasons for this domination. And it’s not to say they are they are always the best bet for some professionals or the serious Amateur. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Rocketeer, If you are looking for a D SLR look at the Olympus E1 carefully. Some of the reviews when it came out were less than flattering, but this camera is a classic case of the end result adds up to far more than the sum of the bits, and in practice it has been excellent. Olympus has far and away the best build quality of all the camera manufactures. Second time around reviews from professional photographers show what an excellent tool it is. Also the system has been designed for digital and is the only D SLR system that can boast this.
Lens manufacturers such as Sigma are now producing some cheaper lenses, as are Olympus, so the system need not cost the earth. My advice to you is do your research, and read all the reviews carefully, making sure you get user reviews as well as the purely technical reviews. I would also make up your mind on what you want your camera too do. Photographing aircraft is notoriously difficult, and results are often disappointing unless you have the right equipment and are prepared to practice.
Your lenses are where the bulk of money goes with camera equipment and Nikon and Cannon have designed their D SLR’s to use their existing Lenses. So if you have any lenses this is where you should go.
Could be RR Griffons or Napier Sabre in unknown cowling
Blackburn Firebrand ?
Or……..what about a Brabazon. no no that was 6 blade contra props
Princess flying boat
glad that you are one of the few who appreciate what a good job those guys have done with limited resources.
AFH10 A bit sweeping I think. I think the many thousands out there do appreciate all the hard work. Don’t make the same mistake politicians make when we dare to criticise some suggestion or piece of legislation they are responsible for. You may find that criticism then comes your way from those that may think you are right.
Isnt the Spey engine still in use in Italy and Brazile? So what would the problem be with operating the Bucc? What aircraft still use the Vulcans turbojets that they would still be supported?
I think that the Olympus may have some industrial and or marine applications that may be behind keeping it supported??????
What’s a ‘Pomes’?
Patriot of Mother England, sir.
This all refers to STANSTED airport, not STANSTEAD, a small village in Suffolk!
Spelling, please, good folk, especially for our foreign friends!
Slap wrist, Slap wrist, Slap wrist, 😮 😮 😮
Go to the back of the class and do a hundred lines.
…or by road..
From Stansted Airport0.49 At Bassingbourn Roundabout take the 2nd exit, then merge onto the A120 (signposted London) A120 0.49
1.43 Bear left, then at Priory Wood Roundabout take the 1st exit onto Thremhall Avenue Thremhall Avenue 1.91
0.76 At roundabout take the 5th exit, then join the M11 motorway (signposted Cambridge) Birchanger Green Service Area (WELCOME BREAK) M11 2.67
17.39 Leave the M11 at junction 10, then at roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A505 (signposted Royston) A505 20.06
0.61 Arrive at Duxford Airfield,Cambridge A505 20.66
– Section time 0:29, Total time 0:29
You need to treble that time on a show day on that route from Stanstead, but then again the computer won’t know that. Stanstead Elsenham, Newport, Great Chesterford Duxford by the Scenic Route is 20 to 30 minutes even on the busiest days.

A very, very silly idea indeed.
As Papa Lima says, there are regular Stansted – Cambridge direct trains, only about a 30 minute journey. You can then get a bus directly from the station to the airfield. Why ever would anyone want a to do a 1-hour tube journey into central London, then a train all the way from London to Cambridge?
And it will cost you a lot less going via Stansted too! 🙂
Couldn’t have put it better myself. Stanstead is the ideal place to fly into to visit Duxford. As daily user of this line there are two trains per hour to Cambridge plus special Airport trains that regularly run to Cambridge. To get a train that would stop at Wittlesford you would go to Bishops Stortford first and then change to the Cambridge train, as the airport trains only stop at Audley End and Cambridge.
It’s not strange at all.
RAW is, as the name suggests, the raw data from the sensor. For different manufacturers to use a common data format would require common sensors. This will simply never happen.
As I’ve said already, the best that can be expected is for them to adopt a common format for wrapping up the data. Commercially I don’t see a great deal of point in anyone being first to do even that. People whining on the internet are usually a tiny proportion of the customer base.
Damien, at last some one who understands the post that started this thread. However I would think that you are both right and wrong with your last sentence. From my research into Digital Cameras, as I’m about to dip into the digital field as soon as I have used up the last of my stock of Fujichrome, and from my position as an IT engineer for a bank, it bothers me what Nikon has done encrypting it,s white balance and rules them out immediately from my shortlist. It does not bother the average photographer as they invariably allow the camera to process the photo’s they take into JPEGs and so this whole RAW issue is for them a non issue. And as a proportion of the user base those that let the camera do everything must be at least 99%, if not 99.9%.
However for those of us that are serious amateurs and for the professional community it is an issue. And of the remaining 1% who do shoot RAW and put in the effort to do their known processing I believe a majority of this community are becoming concerned at the trend that Nikon has started. So it depends how you look at the stats.
Think of it this way. Back in the film days how many had an enlarger and processed their own E6 then printed the best shots to cibachrome. Less than 1 % I bet. Remember Kodachrome, you had to send the film to Kodak for processing, no push processing or any other control. Although it was (still is) an excellent film, its not the best any more or the most popular. Kodak however gave us a choice, and Ektachrome was there for those who craved total control. Or you used Agfa or Fuji. I view what Nikon has done as similar to Kadachrome, but with out the choice of any other film in your camera.
There are currently 5 different sensor types for DSLR’s out in the Market. There is a very good test in one of the current camera mags for those interested. There will never be a common format for RAW, it’s not that type of file. It’s the unprocessed raw data captured by the sensor. You chose to let the camera write this to the card or you allow it to develop this data and present you with a file that is a recognised std. For those looking for artistic control the later course is not satisfactory.
Now if I could just find a DSLR that’s going to be as reliable as my Olympus OM’s have been. Any suggestions?. OM1 purchased 1975, OM2 1980, OM4 1984, and Zero visits to the repair shop. A hard act to follow I think. 🙂
This engine is often confused with the Merlin but has absolutely nothing in common with the Merlin.
Transport heads were originally developed for the Avro York fitted with Merlin 24’s. These were the same engine as fitted to the Lancaster from about 1944 onwards. These were the most powerful of the engines fitted to the Lancaster 1 and were mirrored in the Lancaster III with 224’s from Packard. However the York had a greater life expectancy than the Lancaster and RR developed the 24T with improvement to the heads in particular to give a longer valve life. Up to this point development had concentrated on strengthening the pistons, improving the supercharger and better lubrication of the bottom end to improve performance.
Post war the Merlin 24T formed the basis of the 500 series that found its way into the Spanish built CASA CA2111. The 600 and 700 series engines were based on the 100 series that powered the latter Mosquito’s and Hornets, with vastly improved lubrication and were also 2 speed 2 stage engines. They were built exclusively for the civil market. It has been stated that the development effort expended on the Merlin post war was as large as that from 39 to 45, such was RR desire to gain a foothold in civil aviation with the Merlin.
I think we may be missing the point here chaps. The argument is not anything to do with digital vs film. It’s about open standards and openness. Read carefully what is said. If you want an analogy then imagine you have a film in your camera and it can only be processed by the manufacturer and viewed using a special projector produced by the same manufacturer. And what if you had brought a shiny new camera that suddenly could only take this film. It doesn’t take much imagination if your mind is open to see where this leads.
This appears to be what Nikon have tried. I believe it will backfire on them, because as clever as they think they are, there are even cleverer geeks out there that seem to be able to crack these things in hours of release. The point is that why do it in the first place. We don’t want the digital camera industry to end up pull a stunt like the music industry is trying, suing its own customers. It beggars belief what goes on in the minds of some modern day executives. Oh I forgot they are all Lawyers.
