Centaurus
My last comment on this subject is this, and I do not in any way wish to re-ignite the debate over this particular video. The shot was filmed uzing a Zoom lens that exgaggerates the depth of field in any shot, by the time the Spit was over our heads it was at well over 50 feet, the prop never came anywhere near us.
Well said. There’s a lot to be said for a long focal length lens. Check out the shot of the Cat landing on the lake. Same effect.

Its got to be this beauty fastest of all the Hawker Pistons, with the panicle of mans ingenuity up front powering it. 😀 😀 😀
Well done on riding that one out YakRider and good to see you back
I seem to recall that there was some mention of Don’s state of mind or health???? in the accident report. I could be wrong though. I watched the Invader at the 1980 May show in Biggin but I don’t recall barrel rolls. Did other pilots fly the Invader as well?
Perhaps adding the yellow tail and green sripes of the 447th Bomb Group or a red splash of the 1st air division would liven Sally B up a bit. Plenty of examples with Olive Drab and Grey so a complete respray would not be needed I would hope. I would love to see her in natral metal for a few years and then we could have a diferent tail every year
Now where is my friend Bill, I have and idea for him :p :p :p
Mossie did the pathfinder run for the heavies. Lancaster with AJ codes. Were they not for 617 squadron?

It’s taken me 20 years of careful prodding to get what I want, and not what others want.

Steve just to say a very big thanks once more for the chance to view the video. The 82 show was a special day for me 14th May as after visiting the show I went to a party that night and met Mrs TempestNut. So it brought back nice memories for me. And what’s more she knew some of the display Pilots through ex RAF pilots she meet in the Middle east whilst they were flying for the Sultan of Oman’s Airforce. As they say its a small world.
Thanks everyone for your kind words.
Tempestnut – Waikato – errrr, no thanks. I wouldn’t touch the stuff with a barge pole. That’s the beer for people with skinheads, goatees and dirty singlets mate! 😀 And it ain’t even made in the Waikato neither!
Don’t worry, I did sink a few Lion Reds, which on the scale of things is not the best beer either but a million times better than Wakatoo, as it’s known.
Dave Lion Red, yes good choice, however things have obviously changed more than I thought. We use to drink DB or Waikato in my university days in Hamilton. More beer than lectures I think. I didn’t notice too many people with skinheads, goatees and dirty singlets in those days or perhaps that was because we were all like that. Have a couple more for me
Happy birthday Dave and have a nice Waikato for me as well
Hello TempestNut.
The serial can be found in the “Typhoon and Tempest : Canadian Story” by Halliday and also in “the Typhoon and Tempest Story” by Thomas and Shores.
I’ll go with what you’ve told me, but I have one last question : do the leading edge bands go out to between the guns? I’ve seen both styles.
Thanks a lot, you are a great help to me!
😉
Olivier I’ll check out that serial for you as it does not seem to fall into the published production batches I have. I hope my references are not incorrect!!! And I see if I can find out about the yellow as well. I’m modelling a Typhoon with a similar serial that flew 65 missions June 44 to Dec 44 with the same pilot, outstanding record I would say, and the yellow band question is pertinent to my model. May take a couple of days.
Tactics changed constantly throughout the war so you need to ask when to get a reasonable answer to a good question.
For example for the Dresden raids, the Lancaster’s formed up over Reading a la Eighth Airforce before setting out for Germany. Although Bomber Command never flew in formation, they tried to compress the stream continuously throughout the war.
Hello,
I’m trying to find out more about WC Davidson’s aircraft while he was leading 143rd wing. The serial is MN158 and with the markings that I have, I don’t know if the aircraft carried the yellow leading-edge ID marks and/or the underwing ID bands.
I’ve seen photos of 3-bladed Tiffies without the yellow markings and the bands, so I’m now highly confused.
Can anyone offer me help?

Olivier can you check that serial for me as I have MN113to156 then 169 to 213 etc etc but not 158
As for colours the aircraft would have been delivered in std day fighter scheme with sky band and spinner and yellow leading edge. Additionally Typhoons around this time would have had the Typhoon style black and white bands under the wings. Other Tiffies with similar serials were delivered early 44. All Tiffies around this serial had Bubble canopies and three blade props with the Typhoon tailplane.
What time frame are you asking about??
OK just found that he lead 143 wing from Jan44 to May 44 so the above colour information should be correct, assuming no local modification.
