DH and 98 … I agree , it seems a Mosquito .
Yes , Australia .
The best about him is this link , with nice interview at the bottom of the page :
Oddly I’ve treasured the gun camera ( with film ) of his crash-landed Spit lost on 4 Sept. 1943 .

Serial MN197 comes from the ORB , but maybe it is wrong . All Typhoons were then reported with MN range .
About MN175 ‘s engine , there were some pictures of the dig on the Sq198 web site years ago .
Hi Andy ,
If the picture is dated 15 June 1944 , that is very interesting . That day F/Sgt Edward Bartley was killed on a R/P mission aboard MN175 TP-U . Maybe he is one of them ? In 2004 we have investigated the crash-site and found the Napier engine , unfortunately he was killed bailing out too low after being hit by flak .
Just to add that TP-T was then MN197 , flown that day on the same mission by S/Ldr Davies DFC .

Hi Dan ,
They were seen ( around 20 ! ) but I don’t have them alas . ECPA-D don’t release them , only for purposed publication .
Possibly W3654 , lost 12 April 1942 . Pilot P/O A van Rood POW . Aircraft seen with small fuselage roundel on crash-site. There were also pictures of crashed EB-H W3450 , F/Sgt Watts killed same day .
Also seen at ECPA-D several pictures of crashed Spit XII EN235 EB-S , F/O R. Hogarth killed 18 July 1943 , with Kurt Goltzsch who claimed it .
Thanks Andy .
There’s also a french Red Cross report which states that the body was not recovered.
Did the MREU positively identified the wreckage , any serial found ? Or was it by date given of the crash ?
We went to the site this week-end , it seems however that Typhoon R8834 had exploded on impact .

Hello Dave ,
I think you are talking about Maurice Halna du Fretay , who escape from Brittany on 15 Nov. 1940 , flying a Zlin aircraft to UK . He was later killed during the Jubilee raid on 19 Aug. 1942.
Here’s a link ( in French ) :

Yes , a niece has been found at Calgary . Interestingly both Harold Heninger and his brother Raymond were posted to Sq 91 and they shared the same plane , Spit XII DL-B , as they were not allowed flying on the same ops . Raymond survived the war and died 20 years ago.

Is that from a French Aéronavale Seafire XV ?
