Back in August 2008 myself, along with Gordon White of Skysim and Brian Franklin ( then with Skysim) visited Scampton to aquire photographic material for the scenery Team SDB produced. We were driven around the airfield by the retiring Reds Adjutant.
Eventually discusion got around to the reported vacation of Scampton to Waddington by the Reds. He told us that:
a) Scampton was an English Heritage site and so had to remain in existence add to that the fact that 1 Hangar then [now] housed the Dambusters museum.
b) Even if the Reds moved to Waddington they couldn’t practise there and would still have to practise over Scampton. That would mean manning the tower, fire crew and ground crew attendance probably even even the Medical Centre remaining operational. Not to mention hangarage and repair facilities in case of emergency landings eg. bird strike.
c) There is a rather hush hush outfit now operating from the old Airmens Mess as we learnt when we got ‘lifted’ by the RAF fuzz for photographing it.( They didn’t erase ’em all tho’) :diablo:
All in all it seemed unlikely that Scampton would close. Remember Scampton closed once before and was re-opened as the Reds base because they were already using it for practise when at Cranwell. So back then it was realised by Top Brass that it made sense to man it permanently.
Ah yes it’s also an MoD filming location. I think it is to be used for the new Dambusters film

Spitfireman suggested I posted my queries on this thread. BTW info gleaned from this thread has already been useful. I’m planning a ‘remake’ of St Mawgan for FSX, the favourite airfield of many I think.
I’m having problems placing and orientating this hangar pictured here in Keith A. Saunders book. I’m further confused by info supplied by an ex-St Mawgan bowser driver (Matadors) who placed it near the present Newquay terminal. ( 2nd pic) He remembered U-2/TR-1s using it as well as Shackletons and later Nimrods.
Can anyone help? Pics of anything in the late 60s early 70s would be great. Particularly buildings etc.

Late 60s early 70s. early Nimrod era. Got access to many AI types of an international flavour of that period.
BTW great response there pagen hehe.
“when will this add on be ready Mickey?” Got no deadline Pagen so I can’t say. It will be payware on Flightsim.com but there will be titbits for helpers 🙂
Good idea there spitfireman. Good responses already. Amazing how St Moggie is rembered with such fondness by so many. I reckon it’s the nearness of Watergate Bay and all those topless surfers. 😮
My own memories are of holidaying at Trevarrian Holiday Park, owned by the Philips family. The first time we went would’ve been around ’76 or ’77. Dave Phillips hadn’t been opened many years. 1st year the pool was opened if I remember. Anyway being a Saturday when we arrived and the RAF operating a 5 day week 😀 it was quiet………………..until about 7am Monday when the first Nimrod flew out at what seemed like ” down on the deck” and nearly blew the trailer tent away. Found out later from 2 guys we were fishing with that that particular pilot liked to waken us all up. It worked 🙂 Brilliant! Best holidays we ever had were spent there in following years. Took in the Airday one year. I remember watching a C-5 Galaxy arrive the day before. It just seemed to hang in the air above Newquay.
Ah nostalgia. It must have been great to actually be a part of it like you chaps.

Well we didn’t think it was hush hush but Plod obviously did. We had to erase all our pics of the Airman’s Mess…………..or almost all 🙂
Then it was blades shedding ice. Hmm! Also a line drawn between Waddington and Donna Nook goes right through…….let’s see………..ah Cornisholme wind farm.
St Mawgan work in progress
Got a couple of things done. Hangar 404 is OK externally but if I want to have a door or two open I need pics of the inner walls.
But more importantly I have the Airways done. 😉
Very nice, be aware that all the topography behind the 4 hangars (south of) was a fairly steep hill down as far as the medical centre, then more shallow to the guardroom. This was a well known feature of St Mawgan often referred to as ‘heart attack hill’
There is an internal shot on my post 45
There is a great shot from Dr Strangelove on post 203

My bowser driver contact mentioned that hill saying it was a barsteward in a Matador due to all the gear changes of the crash box. However I’m no expert at re-meshing and features like that are dificult to reproduce in MSFS. It is just a game after all. [ hides under desk to avoid all the bricks] 🙂 . Have to see how it turns out but it’s not always practical, due to frame rate issues, to create architectuaral reproductions of tech and acommodation sites.
Although there was plenty at Scampton.
Thanks yet again Pagen. I was 6 feet short. Not bad for a guesstimate I suppose.
St Eval church
Ok here’s another request. Does anyone know the hieght of St Eval church tower excluding pinnacles?
Thanks for the good info. Makes my task much easier. If anyone is interested in Flightsim addons Team SDB has a facebook page. 🙂 http://www.facebook.com/#!/TeamSDB.scenery
Thanks Pagen I get the same dimensions and headings as you did. Sometimes runways were lengthened at an advanced construction stage and as it was started in 1940 that may be the case here. That’s how I’ll do it anyway sometimes a little license is acceptable.
Don’t know if it will ever get finished many simply languish on my HDD when I run out of inspiration. St Mawgan is an example although once the Enterprise is put to bed you never know……………..;)
PS. You must have more plans than Hendon. 🙂
Thanks for the info you guys all good stuff there. The location is actually Burtonwood. Using the info I might now move into the early 60s. Depends on the availability of suitable a/c for AI. Have just ordered a copy of Aldon P Ferguson’s book for more pics.

The two concrete towers ….
The one nearest Watergate Bay was the Watchman Radar tower, the other close to the old watch office was the SSR tower (Secondary Surveillance Tower), both worked together and were built in the early 90’s and decomissioned in Dec 2008.The red building is probably part of one of the Explosive Storage Areas, as was. Not sure exactly where you mean though.
Thanks Wingco they can come out then as they wouldn’t have been there in the mid eighties. We could always move on to the early nineties. I’ll leave out the red building too.
Another question. 🙂 When were the HAS built?
All these points will firmly place the scenery in a time frame. The rivet counters are out there!;)
Edit: Thats the brick building I saw. At the time I thought it could be the old watch office but I now know that was probably rendered and green.
