As an update to post #1504 the C46 wheel has arrived and I have taken some comparison shots of it against a C47 wheel. As you can see both are very similar however there is a subtle difference in size. The C46 is a little wider at 39.5cm across whilst the C47 is 33.5cm. The second photo shows the C47 over layed on top of the C46. The easiest way to tell on the eye without the benefit of a tape measure is that the C46 appears a little stretched out in its circular shape.
Interestingly the C47 wheel which you see in the picture has had an interesting history, started life with TWA as a passenger sleeper, post war it went to the Luftwaffe and was fitted with a F104 nose to train the starfighter pilots, ended its final days working for an oil company and scrapped at RAF Halfar in Malta.
Hi Nick, re #1501, they are not my wheels, I obtained the picture from the internet to give a comparison of size.

Funny you should mention a C46 Commando wheel. This has been on eBay for a few weeks and I was fortunate to get it after a low ‘make an offer’ in the final days of sale. I’m betting on it being a C46 Commando wheel from the measurements given by the seller. In theory it should be the same size (height) as a C47 wheel but a couple of inches wider. However nowhere near as big as a Martin wheel. Note how long the lower stork is on the Martin wheel. Once it arrives I’ll post a picture of it next to a C47 wheel for comparison size.
Potentially as you initially suggested it could be a Martin Mars, although similar in shape and design this should be noticeably larger than the DC3 wheel.
Lol Rocketeer !! A 24 hour period is not too bad a turnaround, your story reminds me of occasions at Shoreham when I’ve seen items sold several times over in the same day, jumping from stall to stall each time with an inflated price and perhaps a different provenance.
Hi Martyn, I’ve sent you a PM to see if you have any duplicates to swap, I have a spare TU-22M3 yoke amongst others. Any one else with any potential exchanges feel free to PM me.
Nice collection which you have Martyn, well done.
Any field reports from this event ? Any good finds ?
Judging by the condition of the toilet that aircraft has sure experienced some turbulence in the past !
