Boarded a Swiss DC-9 and a Dan Air 727 through the rear stairs sometime in the early 90’s. Makes perfect sense if you are seated to the rear of the aircraft and saved lengthy waits in the aisle whilst people mess around with their bags in the overhead lockers. No doubt also any opportunity to air the aircraft out when smoking was permitted in the rear rows. I always remember the cigarette haze at the back of aircraft (talking about the 70’s here). Anyone visiting Brooklands air museum can get a similar experience to see what it was like boarding an aircraft through the tail as it is the only way to access their BAC 1-11.
Thanks for your replies folks, I have never seen an Il-14 and would love to see one with engines roaring. I did have the pleasure of seeing some Il-18’s in my younger years whilst spotting at Manchester (late 70’s). Tarom and Balkan airlines come to mind. I do miss the variety of Russian aircraft from our skies, things are very sterile at the moment with Airbus and Boeing dominating the industry. Having said that it was only one evening last week when I was sat in my home and I heard an hefty drone in the skies. Upon checking the plane finder app I was amazed to find out that an Antonov 12 was passing overhead on its way to one of the BAE airfields, not sure what this flight would have been for.
How many stalls do you already have booked in, out of interest?
There were a couple of Auster leg struts for sale (PM me if you need the sellers details), Harvard canopy and tail fin, DH Venom wing tip, Canberra throttle box, part of a F4 phantom wing with light, piece of Vickers Victor fuselage (unconfirmed), hostspur glider small cockpit windows and frames, a couple of wooden props (of which one I acquired) and the usual instrumentation and switches etc.
It’s what I expected, not much but I found a couple of bits to make the journey worthwhile and it’s always good to cathch up with others.I know of at least one trader who didn’t turn up because of the impending weather, not sure if it put others off. Noticeably the autojumble was down also this year. Anyhow it is what it is, the chase is always better than the acquisition !
I always feel sorry for this event, seems to have a bad run on the weather, tomorrow is 50/50 for rain, none the less it can be an enjoyable event if the weather behaves itself. Some nice finds can be had from time to time, happy hunting for those attending tomorrow~
Is the Comet open for inspection this year ?
Yes depending on the weather!
As we are coming into the aerojumble season anyone know of any other aerojumble events this year? I see the helicopter museum have one on the 6th May and Popham slightly before this on the 1st. Any others planned ?
thanks for the heads up, out of interest how many other stalls are there selling aerobillia items ?
Luftwaffe stick top relic condition :
Was anyone lucky enough to secure the Shorts Calcutta yoke ?
Strange goings on…
Sorry the well spotted should be for this particular quote !
Bit fishy that….
Well spotted, pretty daming I would say, and I’m not talking about the dambusters raid.
Hello Martynp, I don’t think it’s aviation related due to it being pretty basic and crude unless it was produced as a training aid, that’s just a guess on my part. What I can shed light on however is it’s recent origins. I have seen this wheel for sale (or at least very similar) some years back on a French aviation web site. It was described as an unidentified wheel similar in design to the Junker 52 and sold for a couple of hundred euros. The link below shows the company’s previous sales, scroll through the thumbnail pictures towards the bottom of the page and you will see your yoke next to the Trident yoke. Click again on the thumb nail of your yoke and you will see the description. Hope at least this provides some information for you. By the way this site is pretty good and they do get some nice yokes and grips from time to time , I’ve purchased from them in the past with no problems
