Hi,
What about the ME262 control grips, do they look genuine?
Returned to Istanbul earlier this week and went to the transport museum (not to be confused with the airforce museum near the airport), some nice display items such as a F5 Freedom fighter cockpit and ex Yugoslav airforce Dakota. Was disappointed not to see the B24 cockpit which had been recently restored having been recovered from the Agean sea in 1995 (any one know where this has gone?) Also in the adjacent car park looking a sorry state and open to the elements were a complete set of wings with 4 large piston props in tact, due to the propellers being bent I presume it has been removed from an aircraft which has crashed, perhaps its the wings and engines to the B24? Can any of our Turkish friends be able to shed any light on this?
The Afghan A300 skidded off the runway at Istanbul on the 23rd March 2007, fortunately no fatalities. I came across it on the 28th March 2007 and it appears to have had its tail cut off from the rest of the aircraft body (I presume the height of tail was a hazard so near the runway threshold). This aircraft can now no doubt be considered a complete right off.
Looks like a H.S Trident, seems not to have the small side oblong window above the main windscreen, so I wonder if its original or not?
OK-GLI located at Bahrain for the moment is the only surviving Russian Space Shuttle which has flown. It flew 25 test flights in the earths atmosphere, unique to this space shuttle is that it could take off conventionally from a run way under its own power and also land conventionally on a runway (Unlike the American space shuttle which needs a piggy back ride on a rocket to enter space). There are lots of film footage of this aircraft on U-tube taking off and landing. The only other Buran space shuttle to fly was unmanned, it went into space (Rocket assisted) and orbited the earth twice before landing on a runway (similar to the American version). Sadly this spacecraft was destroyed when the hanger it was being stored in collapsed due to poor maintenance killing 6-7 workers. Therefore OK-GLI in Bahrain truely seems unique as the only surviving craft which has flown abeit in the earths atmosphere. There were other Buran space shuttles built but these were test beds and never flew.
Lydd
Does anyone know if there will be an airshow again this year at Lydd and if so what aircraft will be participating. Last years airshow was pretty good considering it was a first for the airport (and things can only get better!).
Well as stated previously its certainly not WW2, I intially fancied it myself but it looks too much like hard work, anything with square cut outs normally spells grief, this being instrumentation which is hard to get hold of. When I first saw the panel due to the colour and amount of instrumentation I thought of a RAF transaport type aircraft, however on checking cockpit diagrams it doesn’t appear to be VC10, Tristar, Nimrod, Herc, Andover or anything else I can think of. If you don’t know what type of aircraft its come from then its going to be that much harder to restore!
Andy, try again, I’ve deleted a load of messages so should be working as normal again. Thanks Darrell
Thanks, I ‘ll have a good think about this and see what stuff I can muster together, I suppose buy having a stall you also save on the £8 entrance fee therefore in reality the cheaper outside pitch in theory is only going to be an additional £22 ? Whats the weather forecast going to be on this date???
Look forward to it, any idea of what the stall prices are going to be?
Anyone know if this Vickers Varisty cockpit has been sold or did the sale fall through and is she still in situ?
Just finished reading an excellent book by Steve Morrin called “The Devil Casts his net” about a Silver City Bristol Wayfarer G-AICS which smashed into Winter Hill (Lancashire) in 1958. The book is well researched and written, thought it deserved a plug!
Thanks for the info GASYD on the current status of the Viscount cockpit at Brooklands, would you know if they intend on opening this up to the public once it is restored?
On another note do you have any contact details of the guys who are working on the Vickers Viking, I believe they are BA engineers?
Many Thanks
If anyone is interested let me know, I can source most of the cockpit interior for the Viscount, incl seats, panels, throttles etc. Just need the shell of a cockpit to fit them into, but with 2 young kids and a demanding full time job I havent got the time to get involved too much, next best thing is to go into partnership with someone. Mind you the cost of transporting this cockpit pit out of Stock in Essex to where ever will be a crippler in cost!
Many thanks for this chaps, anyone know what happened to the cockpit which was at Hannningfields metals (Stock, Essex) last year and advertised on ebay? Was it sold or eventually scrapped?
