I assume the heavy bomber attending is the Tu-160 that bears his name.

No. Looks like it will be a Tu-95MS.

Might be a similar scenario to the USN EP-3E collision with the J-8, except that the Herc was on a Special Ops mission and not ELINT?

Huh? The Coalition operating in Afghanistan have overflight rights with Turkmenistan. This airbridge extends from Europe out over many former Russian republics.

How come the crew did not notice the “Mig”?It seems kinda silly to me that the mig just showed up there and flew into the propeller of Hercules without making itself visible to the crew,to let them know he is there.

This wasn’t an intercept! C-130 lumbering along. “MiG” moving fast and unaware of traffic until the last moment clips C-130. Many factors could result in this; weather, visibility, time of day/night, ATC ****-up etc. The C-130 crew/passengers certainly had a lucky escape!

Come on Kfadrat. This release was sanctioned by the Syrian Government. There has been no retraction of this statement. Fayssal Mekdad released the letter with the statement “On instructions from my Government”. Are you really saying the US State Department doesn’t receive briefs from the US military? Is this what you were told when you were in the Syrian military? Sorry, but you are extremely good at back-peddling. Why would the government authorize a statement highlighting that Syrian airspace was violated when it was a fabrication? It stands officially from the Syrian Government. It’s entirely up to you if you want to disregard their information, but until that government communiqué is retracted then the airspace was “officially violated.”. Start a new thread when the Syrian Government retracts their communiqué!

“The Government of the Syrian Arab Republic wishes to inform you of the brazen violation by Israel of Syrian and Lebanese airspace and of the aggression against Syrian territory,…”

    Kfadrat,
So, the Syrian Government just embarrassed themselves in front of the United Nations? If the statement was untrue then there has been no retraction. The record stands from the Syrian’s themselves that their airspace was officially violated and that claim has never been retracted. Regardless of how long the F-16s were in Syrian airspace they were there. No amount of spin by yourself “30 seconds” or “EVEN if the – which is NOT confirmed at all and disbutable to say the least” withstanding will change the official version. This statement was officially sanctioned by the Syrian government. Are you saying the no government official was briefed by a representative of the military on this matter? I remember distinctly that you found it hard to believe that ‘Olive Harvest’ U-2s routinely penetrate Syrian airspace under agreement. You are a Syrian national write to the foreign minister in question regarding his airspace violation claim.

Regardless of how long the F-16s were in Syrian airspace the Syrians did admit that they were in their airspace. This was confirmed by Farouk Al Sharaa,- Syrian Minister Syrian Foreign Affairs:

“Identical letters dated 5 October 2003 from the Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and to the President of the Security Council

On instructions from my Government, I have the honour to transmit herewith the text of a letter addressed to you by Farouk Al Sharaa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic, concerning the violations of Syrian and Lebanese airspace committed on 5 October 2003 by the Israeli air force and the missile attack carried out by the latter on the same day against a civilian site situated inside Syrian territory (see annex).

I should be grateful if you would have the text of the present letter and its annex circulated as a document of the Security Council.

    (Signed ) Fayssal Mekdad
    Ambassador
    Permanent Representative

    ——————————————————————————–

Annex to the identical letters dated 5 October 2003 from the Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and to the President of the Security Council

I wish to inform you that today, Sunday 5 October 2003, in the morning, the Israeli air force violated the airspace of Syria and Lebanon and launched a missile attack against a civilian site situated inside the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, in the village of Ain Al Sahib, north-west of the capital, Damascus. This attack has caused material damage.

The Government of the Syrian Arab Republic wishes to inform you of the brazen violation by Israel of Syrian and Lebanese airspace and of the aggression against Syrian territory, acts which constitute a flagrant violation of the principles of international law and mark a new and dangerous escalation. It invites the Security Council to convene an emergency meeting to consider the Israeli aggression against Syrian territory and the measures that it should take to put an end to the policy of provocation and aggression being pursued by Israel against Syria.

By its continuing aggression against the Palestinians and the strategies being adopted to extend the scope of this aggression against Syria and Lebanon, the current Israeli Government confirms yet again by its practices that it is a Government of war and not a Government of peace.

Syria is not incapable of establishing a balance of resistance and deterrence that would oblige Israel to revise its approach. Syria has demonstrated extreme restraint fully aware that Israel is attempting to fabricate all kinds of pretexts, gleaned from different quarters, to export its internal crisis to the region as a whole and to expose the region to a new escalation and a new conflagration.

Syria, currently a State Member of the Security Council, is convinced that this august Council is the best forum for dealing with this serious development, to condemn it and to put an end to it and prevent it from recurring, since it constitutes a threat to regional and international peace and security, which could have disastrous effects on the situation in the region that would be difficult to control.

    (Signed) Farouk Al Sharaa
    Minister for Foreign Affairs
    Syrian Arab Republic”

Soldier arrested over Mirror hoax photos
    Tue 18 May, 2004 21:27

LONDON (Reuters) – At least one soldier has been arrested over fake pictures showing alleged mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by British troops, the defence ministry says.

The photos were published in the Daily Mirror just days after similar ones were published in the United States showing U.S. soldiers abusing prisoners, shocking the world and causing widespread anger in the Arab world.

A spokeswoman would give no further details about the arrest by the ministry’s Special Investigation Branch (SIB).

“The SIB, as part of the ongoing investigation, arrested somebody to be questioned under caution,” she said. “At least one person has been arrested. It is a soldier.”

Four other British soldiers have been arrested and released without charge by military police probing some of the alleged cases of abuse by British troops.

The Mirror, which sacked its flamboyant editor Piers Morgan on Friday, issued a front page apology for the photos.

The paper was a harsh critic of Prime Minister Tony Blair’s decision to go to war. Blair’s personal ratings have sunk since the U.S-led invasion 15 months ago.

anymore ‘defection’ (espionage) stories you guys got?

During May 1989, Captain Alexander Zuyev defected from the Soviet Union to Turkey in a MiG-29. An image exists of this Fulcrum, pictured in Turkey, in one of the World Air Power Journals.

That pick is from just before the Op Desert Storm when the American forces were building up Desert Shield. At the time Oman had only four of thier hawks and this pic shows a training sortie to gain proficiencies in IFR

Ja, the picture is from 1996! Go to the link that I posted earlier on this thread.
