Does anybody know which Dakota appears in the Biggin Hill shots in ‘The DaVinci Code’, was it there as a ‘prop’ (pun probably sort of intended…..:o ), or by sheer coincidence?
A great day, the first of many (if I’ve passed the test!)
I suspect you have!! Including the rigours of the ‘getting the fence back in’ initiation trial 🙂
At the end of the day I saw Will J’s bike leaning against a post on which was a sign saying “Danger – ejection seat live” 😀 :diablo: 😀
Roger Smith.
…although it is not the most user friendly of ejection devices, you have to get up to a good speed and jam the front brake on suddenly to make it work!
Hi JesseJames,
proceedings start at 1000 on Sunday, hangar tours carry on all day, with the Dakota flying at regular intervals. The Shackleton is due to run mid afternoon, and again at around 1600-1630, alongside the DC6. You can indeed sit on board the Shackleton, which can be booked on the day… ( I will check on the price!)
See you on Sunday!
Will
OK, no Lightnings or Buccaneers (although we hope to have a sit-in) Buccaneer cockpit at our December 16th open day…
Airworthy Meteor, Twin Pioneer, Venom, Vampire, Canberra, Devon…. (or at least nearly airworthy in some cases…), the makings of a private ‘Cold War Memorial Flight’….:)
See http://www.classicflight.com, or come to visit us next weekend at Coventry!
(I ought to point out, so as not to cause dissapointment) that the Vapmpire and Meteor will not be there on the 16th as they are undergoing winter maintenance at Kemble…. But there will be a Shackleton/DC6 joint engine run, and one of our Dakotas flying all day!

Partly in answer to Ant’s queries, a bit more on where we are!
The event is accessed via the airport’s west gate, next to the Oak pub in baginton village, avoid following signs to the airport terminal, as this takes you a fair distance the wrong way! The number 737 bus goes from the station to the main terminal, but this is more than a long walk from the west gate!!
I think that Midland Air Museum’s website has more useful information about buses to the Baginton village area. Otherwise it is about 5-10 minutes in a taxi.
Hope this helps 🙂
Hi Pagen01,
the Devon is indeed an ex-RAE ‘raspberry ripple’ machine. The rest of it survives in storage in the locality, it is unlikely to be put into service in the immediate future, but is one of the many airframes that we have in reserve!
Classic Flight, or indeed classicflight.com, is part of Air Atlantique. The wider Atlantic group still thrives at Coventry airport, with operations contunuing using Lockheed Electras (Atlantic Airlines) and various smaller twins (RVL group, previously Atlantic Reconnaisance). Both of these organisations are now stand alone businesses in their own right, but remain good neighbours. Air Atlantique, under the direction of chairman and enthusiast Mike Collett, now focusses on classic aircraft operations, with a fleet ranging from Auster to DC6 via an array of classic jets!
Our next open day is on the 16th December, with in depth hangar tours and flights in the Dakota!
‘558, I will mention it to the crews, let me know the timings!…
….we won’t be that low though !
Interesting ideas, all a little wide of the mark, anybody wanting to get some pics of the Dak’s new clothes, might like to come and visit us, I will be there to say hello!
I thought it made an interesting addition to the static line, as somebody with experience of designing ATR colour schemes, it was interesting to get a closer look at their Puffin tail art!
In the future people will gaze nostalgically at your pictures of the ’72, post them on forums, discuss them at length….:D
😮
Great fun to fly from a historic airfield in an classic plane.
Oddly, is is probably the UK’s newest airport, but the plane, and the scenery, remain historic enough 🙂
PS Email sent to the airport!
Have just checked the airport site, it is indeed the poster I had sent to the airport to promote last years event!
At least it will have meant people coming early rather than late!
Looking like a good show, but then with some of the aircraft featured I am rather biased! Will be good to see LY-BIG again, probably my favourite non classic flight aircraft!
Dragon Rapide G-AGTM is confirmed (and yes, we will be turning up this year) for pleasure flying from the Aero Club at Jersey airport from the 11th-15th September inclusive. Flights take you around Corbiere lighthouse as far as Elizabeth Castle, giving passengers a similar perspective on the island to the crews in the display.
I will be there at the Aero Club from Monday afternoon until Saturday afternoon. We will be flying passengers from Tuesday morning until Saturday, stopping only when the display is on, on Thrusday.
Do come and say hello!
Will
