Will J,
Slightly off topic – Shouldn’t your user title be “Dakota Promota”?
My very first flight was in a Dakota – 3 months old I was – in 1956, from London to Wick if IRCC 😀
I guess so! I put in the user title before the magazine title was decided upon, I try to avoid plugging it to much here to avoid treading on Key Publishing’s toes 😀 , if you have a copy, any constructive criticism would be greatfully accepted via PM.
PS Proof that the title existed long before my installation as ‘AACF graphics dept’ . 🙂
Notepaper reads: ‘If you can read this you are too close, or certainly within firing range 😀 ‘
Ah, fair enough, I was half right, although I’m sure there was something about the wingtips being the wrong shape?
I’m sure others have more detailed information, but i believe it was in search of greater accuracy, when aquired the Mustang had later spec. P51D wings, and needed other detail improvements.
Echoing what others have said, it is a real privilege to have seen this restoration develop at close quarters, and also that Legends cannot come quick enough! Well done TFC 🙂
That single seat configuration looks a lot like a Yak 7 doesn’t it.
Will, isn’t the original militairy stock configuration of the Yak 11 with that spinner?
J.V.
With the spinner it has a more ‘stock’ look for a Yak C11, I think the modified version with a single cockpit and no spinner is represenatative of some of the earlier radial engined Yak fighters. I suppose my liking for the version without the spinner is more on aesthetic grounds (pesky design students, what do they know 😀 ), and that it was how I first say it at a damp, wet ‘legends a few years ago.
You really should take more notice of the huge six foot white letters under the wing 😉 , PS see you there tomorrow!
PS, Yep, ‘163 is our one!
😀 😀 😀
But probably true 😮
Random link… some interesting Yak images here, probably of more use if you can read the Russian text. 🙂
Looks superb with the wings on, I can’t wait to see the flying pictures. Will the propeller have a spinner? It is interesting how the similarly re-engined (but single seat, a regular at legends) French example changes in character when the spinner is added….
I prefer it in its earlier spinnerless incarnation, see pics borrowed from airliners.net,

Check here for regular updates on the restoration, the engines came off this week 🙂
I suppose that makes it a Dak-11 😀 , thats a thought, one of those would make a fantastic ‘toy’ for hangar 7 at Baginton, plenty of spare parts!
happy birthday, keep up the good work!! 🙂
Maybe an inverted V-8 from a storch? (uneducated speculative wild guess..)
On the subject of Skyraiders, if Yeovilton could spare one of their two stored AEW versions that would have to be my choice for a restoration. Any Skyraider display is always fantastic, and a rare version with roundels (flying a lazy, noisy climbing roll, anybody who was at legends will understand!) would be a bonus!
Currently this rather striking Sea Fury from http://www.ezellaviation.com, up until a few days ago it was something more Dakota-related 🙂
