Just about to post the same thing, remarkable pictures. There is something particularly atmospheric about the one of the B17 sitting amongst grazing cows! (a nice idea for another Sally B fundraising event, is there a suitable airfield with those kind of rural surroundings to make for a different photo opportunity?). The shots of the crews on the ground are also fascinating, well worth a quick stroll to the newsagents!
Just back from watching it again, thanks for all the replies. It is also well worth looking at space race, scroll down the list a bit more. I remember seeing the two films in one day, in a way the computer animated space one works, technically, better as the rapid jolting movements were more easily replicated than the subtle rolling and diving of the spitfire, however, the dogfight, especially given its setting is still awe inspiring ๐ .
Anybody thinking of doing the special effects for a WW2 movie would do well to watch this, although it is obviously a very sedate version of a true dogfight, it probably gives a better impression of the flying involved than the arcade style madness in Pearl Harbor…..
Found It!!!!
Brilliant! Thanks Bradburger, Ashley, the name ‘Showscan’ was the missing link, just try http://www.showscan.com, click on movies and then on the dogfight picture at the top of the list (I think we will have to the excuse the reference to gently flying along the coast in an old biplane when….. ) The footage is amazing, and poigniant in so many ways, you all have to see it.
I havent got a copy of wrecks and relics nearby at the moment, but i’m sure the last copy listed something like five or six of various marks in storage listed as in the new restoration building at Cosford (although this may mean one of several locations around the base/museum). If somebody out there has the new edition hot off the press that should clear up how many Spitfires the RAF still has ‘in reserve’. Off the top of my head there may have been a couple of merlin examples and a PR19.
Another new word to add to the dictionary, try start rather then stary
This is a Blackburn Blackburn II of 422Flt on HMS Eagle in 1926. Ugly, isn’t it.
So good they named it twice ๐ , it has to have one of the best names in aviation history, possibly second only to the Beardmore Inflexible :p
Ugly???? You will stary calling Short Seamews ugly next ๐ฎ
Milton Keynes will always be remembered by me as a โbaptism of fireโ.
We can manage worse than that ๐ , I thought ‘MK’ (I think it was rebranded as such not long ago  ) was supposed to be mapped out to work like an American town anyway!! Try the Coventry ring road, like formation flying around random concrete bollards, sharpens the senses driving to work in the morning!
Seriously, great that the forum, some members in particular, can work as such great ambassadors, it even gives us a reminder of what is out there on our doorstep…
Idea for a long running new thread, given a Hurricane as a blank canvas, what does a bloke paint it as……. ?
I think it is pretty much a civil scheme with a few roundels added for good measure, not an accurate wartime scheme. If I remember rightly the numbers on the fuselage are an american civil reg. altered to give it a millitary appearance.
Easy….. the Shuttleworth Gladiator, always the best combination of precise flying, a beautiful aircraft and a mesmeric, grumbling noise.
Potential threats to knock the Gladiator off the top spot..
Anything Gannet related ๐
The Vulcan (having not seen one fly, move or even start up, yet..)
Two Gladiators ๐ ๐ ๐ (any ideas when this might happen, the TFC one looks to be going well)
Doh! Should have read just before 1, I blame whoever put 1&2 next to each other on the keyboard, sorry if that caused any bother ๐ฎ
What kind of engines did they use, the nacelles don’t look particularly merlin like
PS.. Has anyone got any images of the Westland Welkin, a kind of cross between a whirlwind and a long span glider?
Some more…
A few more.. no particular theme or order… ๐
He drives a sensible car that can be fixed by any blacksmith in the country
Wish I could say the same about mine, grrr.. Fiat electrical systems ๐ฎ
Had a great day on Sunday, cheers everyone for the warm welcome, ever lengthening list of people I didnt manage to have a chat with, there’s always next time!! Shame I had to leave early, get together at the pub looked great. Just had time to see Charlie Brown land (good view from up by the land warfare hall) then back to uni work back in sunny Coventry!
Very nice indeed! Taking your camera out to sea in a canoe, that what I call above and beyond the call of forum duty ๐
Cheers for the photos, I will post pics of the model Jindivik if it ever happens!
