Both sort of right and not! The water is sprayed into the extreme rear of the engine aft of the turbine in the combustion air by an item called the spider.

No it isn’t. The water injection is into the combustion cans and HP turbine area. I think you might be getting confused with the JPT spider.

The prime purpose of the water injection system is to cool the turbine stages allowing more fuel to be burnt, a higher RPM to therefore be obtained and hence more thrust.

Yes, it was taken from the Gnat, a very cool flight. And yes, I do think I am very fortunate!

Thought folk might like to see the attached pic – taken on the way back from Biggin Hill after the 2005 airshow. Sorry about the poor colour quality – the settings on the camera had got all screwed up!

I thought people might like to see a couple of shots I got of the Vixen in her last incarnation. Pics taken on the way back from Biggin Hill in 2005.

Ground runs are being carried out regularly on all three aircraft, yes. They are run monthly, so yes they will be run sometime soon. Times for ground runs are not fixed in stone, so can’t give a definite answer as to when.

A question for HHA ENG. Are the aircraft being operated by HHA or FRA? Do HHA still own them, or have they been sold to FRA? I know some FRA crew are flying them (or at least will be).

The Indians now have 2 ex-RAF T4s, classified as T4i to replace attrition losses of their own T60s. ZB600 and ZB602 are the two jets in question, with ZB601 (now on the fire dump at Yeovil) providing a lot of spares!

David, I’ve never had the opportunity to go up to Vigo Wood, so wouldn’t recognise it from the ground. Nearest I’ve been is the ramp and Air Tragic..

Just because they aren’t carrying guns doesn’t make them any less gunpods. The official designation is still “Pre-Mod KT646 gunpod shells”. They are referred to as gunpods by both industry and the service.

No, I can assure you they are just gunpods… The front fairing caps are just aerodynamic fillers.

[QUOTENo, it is an airfield (of sorts), and with at least one interesting footnote in history. The timer is set, let’s see how long it takes…

I hope somebody wakes up and sees to it that some type of gun is fitted.

Not only is it a liability in the close support role, but the Royal Navy which must rely on the GR.9/9A for air defense now only has an aircraft armed with AIM-9’s and nothing else. No AIM-120, no gun, etc.

At least put a gun on there for Christ’s sake……it doesn’t make sense to leave it out of a dedicated CAS aircraft.

And furthermore, the targeting pod issue with the AV-8B and Harrier GR.7/9 bothers me.

Why not use the CENTERLINE HARDPOINT instead of the inboard wing pylon on the AV-8B and one of the gun pod positions on the GR.7/9.

You have all these crazy assymetric loads because of that.

    It’s very simple.

AV-8B – Two external tanks, two GBU-16 Paveways, two AIM-9’s, one Litening pod…..or hell with no air threat replace the AIM-9’s with AGM-65’s or rocket pods.

Harrier GR.7/9 – Two external tanks, two GBU-24 or GBU-16 Paveways, two AIM-9’s and a pair of rocket pods, plus two 30-mm cannons and a TIALD pod….

Now am I the only one who thinks these loadouts are better than the ridiculous loads I see in AFM when talking about Harrier ops in the ‘ghan?

Oh dear, where do we start with this…

The GR7/7A/9/9A is not an air defence jet, so all the talk about fitting it with gunsfor fleet defence is rubbish. It’s not designed for that, it’s not being used like that. Endex. Take the Sea Harrier retirement story elsewhere.

Gunpods – AV-8B can’t use the centreline for targeting because the gunpods are fitted. The AV-8B gunpod has a round crossfeed betwen the two pods which means you can’t fit centreline stores with the pod fitted. The seeker head would also be obscured by the pods if fitted to the centrline. You can’t carry AGM-65 on the outboard station..

GR7/9 – TIALD pod already on port gunpod station. Can’t be fitted to the centreline due to visibility and environmental issues. Aircraft can still carry two tanks, two Paveway II 1000lb LGBs and two BL755 or equivalent. Or a mix and match of a number of various other stores. Typically, the in theatre jets are configured two ways – I/B tanks with rockets, and I/M tanks with LGBs. They’re also mixing Mav in there as well. Strakes are better for VSTOL performance than gunpods as well…

All that said, the lack of a gun does hampe the jet (IMHO) as a CAS platform. If you need a cheap, quick and easy way of keeping heads down, some 30mm is great. I can imagine a podded gun making an appearance at some stage.

No idea, but a great shame none-the-less. Recently managed to get hold of all his recordings one one DVD.. “Now then Batesy, don’t wake the others up!” Fantastic. It’s always surprised me how many people knew about him..

    Operating costs…

I have a question or two, which may have already been answered, I can’t tell due to the huge amount of wood surrounding the trees here, but :-

    1) Does the money donated so far represent funding to get the aircraft to an airtest, through a full airtest programme, to the first display or what?

    2) Assuming the aircraft is not sponsored for displays, what is the target market for the jet? £7000-£10000 for a display? That’s way too much money for 99% of the airshows in this country… So who’s going to pay for it to appear?
